Advanced Human Resource Management MGT 4533 Summer 2002 8-9:50am Dorman 120 Instructor: Dr. Rebecca Long 3114 McCool Hall 325-7014 Office Hours – by appointment. rlong@cobilan.msstate.edu Text: Jeffrey A. Mello (2002) Strategic Human Resource Management. (CIncinnatti, Ohio: South-Western). And other readings as assigned by the instructor. Course Description: MGT 4533. Advanced Human Resources. Prerequsite: MGT 3513 or consent of instructor. Study of problems in the field of human resource management emphasizing development of the ability to analyze problems and to apply management fundamentals to the human resources arena. Course Objectives: To gain an in-depth understanding of the role and scope of HR problems. To analyze and assess these problems in light of larger business concerns. To identify alternative solutions. To integrate problem decisions into existing human resource and business policy. To select problem solutions consistent with established HR policy, sound organizational design, and competitive enhancement. Grading Scale: Grades are based on a ten point scale (90-100 = A, etc.). Exams: Five weekly quizzes will be given. Quizzes will consist of multiple choice questions and will cover material from the textbook, readings, lectures etc. Course Philosophy: The structure and conduct of this course is based on the belief that all participants are adults and are therefore willing to take responsibility for their own actions and outcomes. This means that, like any truly successful person, you will work for what you get, get what you work for, and refrain from whining about being denied that for which you did not work. Such an adult stance also means that you expect the same of others in this course, in particular, your group members and the instructor. You will thus refuse to indulge your peers when they gripe and avoid personal accountability and you will support them whenever they work for real solutions to real problems. As an adult participant in this class, you should also expect an instructor who is well prepared, informed, and willing to share her knowledge. Finally, you must also expect that your instructor will only test over that material to which you have had ample access and that she will be fair and above-board in all her dealings with you, giving all the credit you deserve. Attendance: To get the full value of a summer college course requires that you consistently attend class. Thus, attendance is required. I do, however, recognize that on occasion attendance is impossible. Consequently, each student is allowed one “free” day during the term. Participation: Students must read, understand, and be prepared to discuss all readings and cases. Although it is impossible to participate without attending class, attendance is not the same as participation. Students must actively participate in all class discussions to receive an A for participation. Assignments: Students will complete weekly case assignments. These assignments are designed to convey the experience of managerial problem solving, policy creation, and design implementation. No late assignments will be accepted. Evaluation: Exams..……………50% Partcipation………25% Assignments…….25% Absences: For all absences beyond the above “free” day, only University approved absences will be accepted. If an exam, discussion, assignment or presentation is missed, the student must have a University excuse. All unexcused absences will result in a grade of 0 for the missed activity and a reduction in the participation grade.
