DESCRIPTION OF KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS DATA DISTRIBUTION NETWORK CENTRES 35% KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS NETWORK CABLE REARTICULATION - 28% Perform or oversee the installation of and maintenance the physical environment of the University’s data, distribution, and network centres upto and including the network rack or network cabinet. This may include: o HVAC / Air conditioners o Standby generators maintained by Information & Technology Services o Uninterruptable power supplies & batteries o Power distribution (load side of UPS) o Fire detection and suppression systems o Environmental monitors o Physical security and access control o Cable ingress points But explicitly excludes data cabling or network infrastructure. Respond to reports of faults (including those from automated monitoring systems) with such equipment. Facilitate third-party access to such centres where required for internal or external work (e.g. electricians accessing a distribution board). As directed by the IT Facilities Manager, inspect new or existing installations and carry out or arrange remedial work. Oversee the installation of new cables on existing routes. Update GIS/mapping information of underground routes. Where necessary, assist contractors and/or Infrastructure & Operations staff understand the location and nature of underground reticulation. 2 COMPUTER LABORATORIES - 21% MAJOR RENOVATIONS, NEW BUILDINGS AND OTHER LARGE PROJECTS - 16% STANDBY IF REQUIRED Perform or oversee the installation of and maintenance the physical environment associated with public computer laboratories, where this may include: o Air conditioners o Physical security and access control o Environmental and other monitoring equipment o Fixed furniture (e.g. benches, desks, but not chairs) o Internal network and power reticulation But explicitly excludes computers, printers, and other ICTs. Respond to reports of faults with such equipment. Assist the IT Facilities Manager in the supervision of major projects by attending site meetings, answering queries, inspecting work, etc. Perform acceptance testing when required. Undertake standby duties when required and in accordance with the agreed service levels. If appropriate, respond to alerts from monitoring system. Respond to fault reports from CPU or I&TS Division staff Determine severity of fault reported per standby arrangements policy. If sufficiently severe, travel to site of fault and attend to fault as per previous KRAs. If unable to restore service, escalate fault to more senior staff or to the appropriate section of I&TS. Remain on site to perform in-person work required by senior staff. JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE A University degree or relevant IT diploma plus two years’ experience is required where such experience includes: Previous experience within an appropriate IT context (such as user-support, IT facilities management, network engineering, etc.) Previous experience in troubleshooting in a logical manner, diagnosing and problem solving of hardware problems, particularly computer or data-centre equipment. COMPETENCIES, I.E. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES The incumbent is required to demonstrate the following competencies: TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES Experience in making up cables, basic soldering, etc. Ability to read and follow detailed technical manuals, including schematic diagrams Ability to diagnose basic electronic or electrical faults. Be experienced in using electronic test equipment. Able to use basic tools, including power tools (drill, etc.) Knowledge of safe working at heights Ability to read and understand a building plan Ability to work with maps, GPS and waypoints (may be developed on the job) Experience operating and testing some or all of the following (remainder to be developed on the job): o large air conditioning / HVAC systems; o standby generators; o uninterruptable power supplies; o security, access control and surveillance systems; 3 o o fire alarms; fire suppression systems. ADMINISTRATIVE COMPETENCIES Excellent organisational skills including the ability to plan, prioritise and meet deadlines Sound computer literacy: able to work well with facilities management software, ticket tracking systems, e-mail, a web browser, word processors and document viewers, spreadsheets. File management skills are also required.
