Brief History and facts
1954 Ray Kroc was appointed as a franchisee by Mac and Dick McDonald in San Bernardino,
California.
1955 Ray Kroc opened his first restaurant in Des Plaines, near Chicago, Illinois.
1959 The 100th McDonald’s opened in Chicago.
1961 Ray Kroc bought all rights to the McDonald’s concept from the McDonald brothers for $2.7 million.
1963 The 500th restaurant opened
1963 Ronald McDonald made his debut.
1966 McDonald’s was listed on the New York stock exchange.
1967 The first restaurants outside of the USA opened in Canada and Puerto Rico.
1968 The Big Mac was introduced.
1968 The 1,000th restaurant opened in Des Plaines, Illinois.
1971 The first European restaurant opened in the Netherlands.
1972 The 2,000th restaurant opened in Des Plaines, Illinois.
1972 The Quarter Pounder was introduced.
1974 The 3,000th McDonald’s restaurant opened in Woolwich, south east London, the first in the UK.
1974 The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia.
1975 The first drive-thru opened in Sierra Vista, Arizona.
1976 Happy Meals were introduced in McDonald’s US for the first time.
1978 The 5,000th restaurant opened in Kanagawa, Japan.
1980 The 6,000th restaurant opened in Munich
1980 The first floating restaurant opened on a steamer in Missouri.
1984 Founder Ray Kroc died and RMCC was founded.
1988 The first restaurants were opened in former Eastern Bloc countries, Hungary and Yugoslavia.
1990 McDonald’s opened in Pushkin Square and Gorky Street, Moscow.
1991 McDonald’s opened in Beijing, China.
1992 The first two McDonald’s family dining cars opened in partnership between McDonald’s
Switzerland and Swiss Federal Railways.
1993 The first McDonald’s at sea opened aboard the Silja Europa, the world’s largest ferry sailing
between Stockholm and Helsinki.
1996 The first McDonald’s restaurant in the world not to sell beef opened in India - in deferrence to the
local culture mutton is used and the Big Mac is known as the ‘Maharaja Mac’.
1996 The first ever ski-thru opened in Sweden.
2000 A McDonald’s in Budapest, Hungary converted an old aeroplane into a birthday party facility.
