Mrs. Loushin’s Kindergarten Newsletter September What are we learning? This week, during word work, we completed concept sorts. We finished a shape sort and started a living/nonliving thing sort. During morning meeting, we have been coming up with ideas on how we can follow our classroom rules during the day (ex: I will be safe by using walking feet in the hallway.) During our literacy block, we have been focusing on a unit about Mrs. Wishy Washy and farms. Our read-alouds have all been about farms or farm animals. Our shared reading has included the big book, Mrs. Wishy Washy and a poem, Mud. Our sight word that we are focusing on this week is the. It is our password to come into our room this week, and we have been finding it within our shared reading and poems. We created a story map of Mrs. Wishy Washy, detailing the title, characters, setting, problem, and solution. In addition, we made a poster about what the characters in the story said. We used interactive writing in which the students wrote the sounds that they heard to fill in speech bubbles, and worked in pairs to draw pictures of the characters. In addition, we wrote our own poems about mud, and created a Mrs. Wishy Washy craft. During phonics, we have been working on names and differentiating between letters. For handwriting, we have focused on the letters Ee, Ff, Gg, Hg, and Ii. In math, we are finishing up learning how to count, write, and represent the numbers 0-10. We finished up our number posters, and they are proudly hanging in our room for everyone to see. Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend! Go Buckeyes! Listen to the teacher. Be kind to others. Be safe. Take care of our materials. Birthdays: None *This week, we have been focusing on what it means to be safe. We have modeled and discussed how to be safe in the classroom, in the hallway, in the bathroom, at unified arts, at recess, and at dismissal. We have learned that a teacher’s number one job is to keep his or her students safe, and have worked hard to do everything that we can to help keep our bodies safe. We have learned that we always need to use our words to communicate with our friends and keep our hands and feet to ourselves.
