“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or
praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Philippians 4:8
Our mind is the greatest treasure we have in terms of those gifts of human life. To protect it, our thoughts must be in concert with the Spirit of God. As our physical body needs exercise, so does our mind. Paul has given us eight words that should guide our thought-­‐life. As we think about such things, they will shape our attitudes and direct our words and actions. No word is spoken or action taken which did not first originate as a thought. And our thoughts are conditioned by repetition. As Paul identifies the objects of our thinking, we discover that they are grounded in God’s revelation of Himself. The command is that our thought-­‐life is to have a very regular orbit around things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. So we must ask ourselves: “Am I filled with God’s gift of peace and joy?” If the answer is “no,” then perhaps it is because our thought-­‐life may be out of orbit. The things we allow our mind to dwell on will be revealed by the way we live. God does not force upon us the things about which we think. He has given us the ability to choose how we think, and ultimately how we behave. The truths of God give us direction for a Christ-­‐like life, and an avenue for obedience, which results in a walk of peace with Him, and unspeakable joy. Heavenly Father, we are so blessed and thankful that You have provided us Your written Word, which gives us an endless well of clear and refreshing water of truth. Forgive us when we lose sight of You and give our minds over to the world, instead of the Creator of the universe. Lord, strengthen us as we choose to give our thoughts and minds to you. Help us to take each thought captive and dwell upon those things that bring you glory and honor. God, we do have choices in this life; & we choose the joy that comes from You.
