TRUE: NOBLE: RIGHT: PURE: LOVELY: ADMIRABLE: EXCELLENT

Philippians Family {Bible} Time #11- What Should We THINK About?
Based on Philippians 4:8- “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is
pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such
things.” (NIV 1984- emphasis mine)
*Gather 8 different snacks; label them with the 8 words from Philippians 4:8 that they represent, and place them
in various places around your yard/home. (Also, provide a large jar and/or Ziploc bag for each individual.)
*Read Philippians 4:8 together and talk about how this verse tells us what we should THINK about.
*Go (in order of the verse) to each snack around your yard/home.
*At each snack, talk about the word represented and how it shows a way we should think. (“We should think on
things that are true. Can you think of something that is true? Is thinking about monsters true? Etc.)
*As you talk, have children take turns putting a couple scoops of the snack into the family jar and/or baggies.
*Each time you move to a new “word” say the part of the verse that you have learned so far.
*While sampling the snack, you may also read the following Bible stories taken from The Jesus Storybook Bible
and/or your own Bible. These highlight how the gospel- the Good News of Christ- is what we should think about.

TRUE:
Read the part in the introduction (p. 17) that says, “You see, the best thing about this Story is – it’s true!”
and “The Beginning: A Perfect Home” pages 18-27 {The Song of Creation, from Genesis 1-2}.
(Almonds… because they look like a seed, reminding us that all new life starts with God… it is all a part of His
TRUE story!)

NOBLE:
“A New Beginning” pages 38-47 {Noah’s Ark, from Genesis 6-9}.
(Cashews… because if you tip them one way they look like a boat… the other way they look like a rainbow,
thus reminding us of this story of a man who was NOBLE.)

RIGHT:
“Ten Ways to Be Perfect” pages104-107 {The Ten Commandments from Exodus 19-20}.
(Fruit-snacks… because they remind us of the “fruit of the Spirit” and how God can work in our hearts to do
what is RIGHT.)

PURE:
“A Little servant Girl and the Proud General” pages 136-143 {The Little Slave Girl and Naaman, from 2
Kings 5}. Talk of how just like Naaman was unclean on the outside, our hearts are unclean on the inside… until
God makes them PURE.
(Marshmallows… because they are white- PURE.)

LOVELY:
“He’s Here!” pages 176-183 {The Nativity, from Luke 1-2}
Talk of how LOVELY Mary was, and talk of how even more LOVELY Jesus was.
(Hershey’s kisses… because they remind us of love.)

ADMIRABLE:
The most ADMIRABLE story ever is of Christ’s work on the cross, “The Sun Stops Shining pages 302-309 {The
Crucifixion, from Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19}.
(Crispex/Chex cereal… because they get crushed or broken- just like the body of Jesus.)

EXCELLENT:
“God’s Most Wonderful Surprise” pages 310-317 {The Resurrection, from Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke
24, John 20}.
(Fish crackers… because many early Christians used a fish symbol for Jesus, and He is EXCELLENT!)

PRAISEWORTHY:
“A Dream of Heaven” pages 342-348 {John sees the future, from Revelation 1, 5, 21, 22}. These words
beautifully proclaim praise to God, who alone is PRAISEWORTHY!
(M&M’s… because they are colorful (like heaven) and are so yummy you want to PRAISE.)
