The Math Lab Academic Support Center Room 228 E What is The Math Lab? The Math Lab is a student centered computer lab available to assist all Ivy Tech Community College students with math coursework to help ensure the completion of their degree or certificate program. We strive to assist students in developing the skills and confidence needed to be successful not only in their coursework, but in their academic, professional, and personal pursuits as well. Knowing that math is a challenging course for many, The Math Lab will provide a quiet and friendly environment, support and encouraging words and knowledgeable tutors. However, The Math Lab is not a replacement for attending class. What do math tutors do? We provide personalized tutoring services with professional and peer tutors at no additional cost to students enrolled in any Math course offered by the college. We offer assistance in understanding concepts covered in class, help in completing homework problems, and provide a variety of resources for each course. Remember, however, tutors are not there to assign grades, to offer opinions about a grade that has been received or talk about professors. Students can expect tutors to be sympathetic, they can’t negotiate problems between students and professors. What should you bring to The Math Lab? Students should bring a copy of assignments, class notes and the textbook when they come to The Math Lab. Most instructors will discuss assignments and take questions in class, so if the assignment is not clear, students are encouraged to ask for clarification. The more information a student brings to the lab, the more effectively the tutor will be able to help the student complete the assignment. If a student misses class, The Math Lab cannot provide documents or information that was provided to students during class time. When should you come to The Math Lab? Students should come to The Math Lab whenever they need help. Some students will just need help getting past one difficult problem; others will need help with underlying concepts. Students with any question involving math are welcome and encouraged to come. Using The Math Lab consistently helps students learn the material and develop a confidence in their own ability to learn math. Keep in mind that while working with a tutor will not necessarily guarantee you an A on your work, recent Ivy Tech statistics indicate that most students who consistently use the tutoring services through the Academic Support Center for Writing and Math see a marked improvement in their academic performance in these subject areas. Where can I get focused attention from a tutor for an entire hour on math? In most cases, tutors in The Math Lab will be able to provide you with one-to-one attention. However, because there are other students using the lab, the tutor will also need to divide his or her time among other students. (Be smart and start your work as early as possible!) If you find that you would still like to have a one-hour session with a tutor and/or if you have ADA accommodations, please see Sylvia Labitzke to make arrangements. The Math Lab Hours: Spring Semester 2015 Monday and Tuesday 9:00 AM—6:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday 9:00 AM—8:00 PM Friday 9:00 AM—3:00 PM Saturday 9:00 AM—12:00PM For more information about the Math Lab, please contact slabitzke@ivytech.edu or 812-492-0323
