Volunteer Tutor – Job Description Position: Tutor Client Group: Adult learners who wish to learn or improve their literacy skills. Location: At a location that is mutually agreed upon by tutor and learner. Meeting places are to be arranged as per Volunteer Policy Guidelines. Purpose of Position: To assist adult learners meet their learning goals. Time Commitment: Tutoring for a minimum of once (1) a week for at least two hours. Duties/Responsibilities: o o o o o o o o o o Set goals with your student. Plan individualized lesson plans Instruct and evaluate your student’s lessons Keep an accurate record of hours spent tutoring , the area of study, and progress made Submit monthly timesheets to coordinator or designate monthly Contact the coordinator or designate monthly Notify the student if you are unable to attend your scheduled session Notify the coordinator or designate of any problems or termination of lessons Attend tutor training and professional development opportunities All tutors are required to obtain a Criminal Record Check Skills/Qualifications: o o o o Proficiency in Adult Literacy skills ( reading, writing, spelling, math) Non-judgemental, friendly, caring, and patient Sensitive to different backgrounds and cultures Excellent inter-personal and communication skills Supervision/Evaluation: o o o Tutors will be kept informed about LAL’s activities and/or changes Contact between tutors and Coordinator or designate will occur monthly Yearly evaluations will be sent out to all tutors Benefits: o o An opportunity to meet new people and help them achieve their adult learning goals An opportunity to give back and get involved in your community.
