COURSE INFORMATION:
Course Description: Major topics include: factoring, algebraic fractions, radicals and rational exponents, complex numbers,
quadratic equations, rational equations, linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations and inequalities, introduction
to functions, and applications.
Course Objectives: The student will demonstrate an understanding of; (1) properties and terminology when working with
mathematical expressions, (2) algorithmic processes and concepts when performing algebraic manipulations, interpretations and
computations on mathematical expressions, equations and inequalities.
Prerequisites: MAT0024 or MAT0028 or satisfactory score on placement test.
COURSE MATERIALS & OTHER RESOURCES:
A WebAssign Access Code is required to participate in this course. The access code gives students access to an
online copy of the textbook, a multi-media library including lecture videos, and much more. The access code can be
purchased alone or packaged with a regular hardcover textbook. If you are considering getting a textbook, it is much
less expensive to buy it as an unbound package than to buy the access code and textbook separately. Assignments
will be due on a weekly basis. If you have questions, please contact me via email or see me in my office before the
due dates. The assignments will be reviewed in class and are the best way to prepare for tests and quizzes.
Assignments done correctly and on time are the key to your success in this course.

MAT 1033 – INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA
Fall 2015
DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC INFORMATION:
The college-wide attendance policy is included in the Syllabus Addendum
http://www.spcollege.edu/central/asa/addendum.htm. The policy notes that each instructor is to exercise professional
judgment and define “active participation” in class (and therefore “attendance”), and publish that definition in each
syllabus. For this class, active participation means that (1) you do not miss more than three classes, (2) you do not
miss more than one test, (3) you do not miss more than one quiz, (4) you do not miss more than four WebAssign
(WA) assignments, and that (5) you are not in violation of the Attendance, Conduct, or Integrity policies
described in this document.
Attendance:
You are expected to arrive on time and stay for the entire lecture. Except in an emergency, a
student who needs to leave early should notify the instructor at the beginning of the period. Failure
to do so may result in an absence. When absent, it is your responsibility to learn what was missed.
Arriving late or leaving early counts as an absence.
If you do not attend class at all during the first week or at all during the second week of the session
the college will be informed that you are a “no show” and you will be automatically withdrawn.
Students considering a voluntary “W” are expected to withdraw themselves no later than October 22
and must do so online in the MY SPC registration area found at http://www.spcollege.edu.
I cannot withdraw you from this class. A student is subject to receiving a grade of “WF” by October
22 (or an “F” after October 22). Please note that if a student is receiving financial assistance and is
also categorized as a WF, then the student may be required to pay back some or all of the financial
aid: http://www.spcollege.edu/withdrawal
Conduct:
You are expected to arrive on time, stay for the entire lecture, and be prepared to actively engage the
material. Turn off cell phones, PDAs, iPods, laptops, and other electronic devices not related to the
course. Please be courteous to those around you. I will not tolerate rude or disruptive behavior in this
class. Disruptive classroom behavior is any behavior that impedes the teaching/learning process.
Examples of such behavior include frequently arriving late for class, arriving unprepared, refusing to
participate in classroom activities, frequently leaving class early, talking out of turn, using a cell
phone during class, using indecent or abusive language, etc.
Integrity:
Cheating in any form will not be tolerated at St. Petersburg College. The College has an official
policy on academic honesty. Please refer to SPC’s Academic Honesty Policy
(http://www.spcollege.edu/AcademicHonesty) for further details. College policy states that a first
offense is given a “zero” for the assignment with no possibility of replacing the score. I take this
subject very seriously and will not tolerate academic dishonesty in the classroom.
Calculator:
There are some restrictions on the type of calculator allowed in quizzes, tests and examinations, so
that students with high-powered and expensive calculators are not at an unfair advantage over
other students. A graphing calculator is recommended, but certain models (TI-89’s, TI-92’s, TINspire, etc...) are not allowed in quizzes, tests and examinations. In addition, certain moderatelypriced calculators are pre-programmed to perform tasks which students are required to be able to
do by hand. Therefore, in order to receive credit for open ended Test questions, all work must be
shown. Although calculators are allowed in general, there are many instances throughout the
course where the instructions ask to "Determine the Exact Value" or to "Evaluate without a
Calculator" or something to the effect of Calculators are not Allowed. For these cases, do not use
a calculator. Quizzes, Tests, and the Final exam may consist of parts for which calculators are not
allowed, therefore it is advantageous to work all assigned non-calculator problems by hand.
SSI:
The student survey of instruction is administered in courses each semester. This survey is
administrated online thru ANGEL. It is designed to improve the quality of instruction at St.
Petersburg College. All student responses are confidential and anonymous and will be used solely
for the purpose of performance improvement.

MAT 1033 – INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA
Fall 2015
Grading:
To encourage students to make every effort to be present, no make-up tests or quizzes will be
given, no exceptions. If a single test is missed, the final exam grade may be used to replace that
grade. If more than one test is missed, those tests will result in a grade of “zero”. Your semester
grade will be a weighted average: WA assignments (7% of overall grade), your best four out of five
25 point Quizzes (3%), and five 100 point Tests & a mandatory comprehensive 100 point Final
exam (90%). Overall Grade: (WA avg)*0.07 + (Quiz avg)*0.03 + (Test & Final avg)*0.90
Grading Scale: A (100-90), B (89.9-80), C (79.9-70), D (69.9-60), F (59.9-0)
Success Tips:
You may find the pace of this course to be considerably fast. You will not be able to learn everything
during the lectures. For every one hour of class, you will likely need to spend three outside the
classroom. Attend class regularly. Read chapter sections before class and again after the material has
been presented. Rewrite your notes after class so you can include more steps/terms/examples. Form
a study group and meet regularly. Ask questions during class and/or office hours for clarity. Please
come see me, call me, or email me with any questions that you may have.
