2014-2015
AP Chemistry Summer Review Packet
Rationale:
There is so much to cover in AP Chemistry and we start the year one month behind. The test occurs in
mid-May, so we (and when I say we, I mean you) must be prepared when the school year begins. Some of you have not
taken Chemistry for a year and need a refresher course. Since AP chemistry requires you to write chemical formulas from
names to describe chemical reactions, you will need to refresh your memories on how to do this. That means you will
need to do some major memorization of chemical elements and polyatomic ions, as well as practice writing chemical
formulas and names. It is absolutely essential that you be able to do this! The other portion of this packet deals with
reviewing the metric system and unit conversions (yes, that means dimensional analysis!), scientific notation, significant
figures, the parts of the atom, classifying matter, physical/chemical properties and changes.
Instructions:
This packet must be completed in its entirety (with the exception of the nomenclature worksheets) by
the third day of school (August 15, 2014). The ion flashcards are due the first day! You will receive a grade for doing
it. Most of the worksheets have some explanations attached. You can also use your textbook.!! The first unit will be on
Chapters 1 and 2. You are responsible for learning the material in these chapters and being prepared for an exam within
the first 2 weeks of school.

__________
Please do not procrastinate! Pace yourself over the summer. I recommend making the
flashcards first and then spending 5-10 minutes a day quizzing yourself. Believe me, your life
will be a lot easier when the school year starts if you become experts in nomenclature! You can
also expect a quiz on the first day of school on all of the elements and polyatomic ions!

Ion Flash Cards
You will also need to make flash cards for each of the 60 ions on the “Know Your Ions” reference sheet
attached. You must memorize these ion names, formulas and charges!
It will be assumed that from your first year course that you are familiar with the symbols and names of the
elements for atomic numbers 1-36 plus Silver, Mercury and Gold. The periodic table you will be given on the
AP exam will have the symbols only – no names! So make sure you know what symbol goes with a given
element name!
Be prepared to be quizzed on these elements and the ions on the attached list on the FIRST DAY OF
SCHOOL!! You can also expect that we will have daily or weekly quizzes on these and on naming compounds.
Below is an example of how the flashcards should be made. You will want to do a good job on these because
they need to last all year up to the AP Exam.
Sodium

Use 3 ½ x 5 inch index cards!!!
Also, read the attached chemical formulas flashcards (3 pages). These
should help, along with chapter 2 in the book, for you to review writing
formulas and naming compounds.
You must know how to write formulas from chemical names to be
successful in this course and you must know your ions to do this!!!!
