Arizona State University invites nominations and applications of an established academic for the position of
Director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, with a term commencing July 1, 2014. The School of
Criminology and Criminal Justice (https://ccj.asu.edu/) is ranked 12th in the nation by U.S. News and World
Reports. The school offers degrees in Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Master of
Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Doctor of Philosophy in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Online
degrees include Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice and Master of Arts in Criminal Justice.
The school has more than 2,176 students and 24 faculty members. It is one of four schools and eleven centers,
including the Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety, in the College of Public Programs
(https://copp.asu.edu/). The School is one of the fastest growing programs at Arizona State University located
in Downtown Phoenix, which is home to 19,041 students and located in the sixth largest city in the U.S.
Under President Michael Crow’s leadership, ASU has undergone profound institutional transformation.
Committed to a strategy of social embededness, ASU has adopted a progressive plan emphasizing access and
financial aid, and excellence in solutions-oriented research. The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice and
the College of Public Programs are important parts of the University’s social transformation agenda.
The Director is a member of the leadership team of the College of Public Programs, has general executive
responsibility for all aspects of the School’s activities, and is accountable on all matters to the faculty, the Dean
of the College of Public Programs, and the central administration of Arizona State University. ASU actively

The Director’s primary responsibilities are to ensure that:
 Faculty hiring, promotion and tenure are carried out at the highest standards of excellence
 The curriculum is academically rigorous, innovative, and responsive to the needs of students and the
community
 Relationships with the community are vibrant
 Budgetary decision making and execution are driven by sound principles, consultation, and
accountability
 Faculty aspirations for additional external funding are fully supported
 The academic profile of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at ASU, in the community, in
the profession, and nationally is advanced
 Academic connections with other units in the College of Public Programs and across the University are
encouraged and enhanced
The Director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice is appointed by the Executive Vice President and
Provost of Arizona State University, acting upon the recommendation of the School’s faculty and the Dean of
the College of Public Programs. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
We seek an individual with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching and
accomplishments and innovation in scholarship, administration, professional work, and community
engagement. A commitment to diversity and student success is essential. An interest in the Southwest and its
many diverse communities is desirable. The successful candidate will be able to work in and be committed to
a multicultural academic and community environment. Earned doctorate in Criminology from an accredited
institution or an allied related field. Present faculty rank of full professor is desirable, although advanced
associate professors will also be considered.
