Pigs are cool!
This week was pig week! We met Wilbur, one of
the world’s most famous pigs, as we began
reading the chapter book Charlotte’s Web as a
class read aloud. Students read several stories
from our reading anthology. They read The Big
Hit and Pigs In a Rig. These stories were about
pigs and reinforced the short /i/ sound. We also
heard and saw a version of The Three Little
Pigs online and then sorted story events by
whether they happened in the beginning, middle
or end of the story. Later in the week we read
the story The Sleeping Pig. After the story the
children wrote about how they would wake the
sleeping pig and get her out of the watermelon
patch. Finally, we made paper bag pig puppets.
We even glued our poem on the puppets so that
the pig can “read” the poem!
During literacy centers we…
•
Listened to the story If You Give a Pig
a Pancake.
•
Played the “Top of the Silo” game to
practice the short /i/ sound
•
Made words out of the letters in piglets.
•
Wrote about what kind of house we
would build if we were the fourth little
pig.
•
Read books from our browsing boxes to
ourselves and to a partner
•
Interacted with
Tumblebooks.com
•
Put together our pig poem in a pocket
chart & read it with a pointer
•
Made our spelling words out of glass
beads
Upcoming Events & Reminders
Caldecott Club
Yesterday we enjoyed our first Caldecott Club.
The whole first grade got together and enjoyed
listening to the Caldecott Award winning book A
Tree Is Nice. Then, students used watercolors
and crayons to create a crayon resist picture of
fall trees, similar to an illustration in the book.
These beautiful pictures are now hanging in our
hallway.
Spelling Review Week
Next week will be a spelling review week. A list of
all the words we have studied so far will come
home on Monday. Students will be tested on 12 of
these words on Friday.

Math
This week in math we learned how to count
on a number line. Students also practiced
finding numbers that were before, after or
between numbers on the number line. We
used these number line skills to work on a
problem solving activity today.
