Reading Comprehension: Formulating Question

As you read you should consider the text on different levels. There are three types of questions that you may consider asking yourself after you finish reading.

Let’s assume that we have just finished reading “The Three Little Pigs”

Questions About the Text: Based on The Three Little Pigs

1) Key literal question (Facts and information are in the text.)

Example:

 How many pigs are in the story, The Three Little Pigs?

 Name all three types of houses the pigs lived in.

2) Key inferential question (Ideas are suggested, not directly stated.)

Example:

 Describe the three pig’s attitude towards the wolf?

 Describe the three pig’s attitude towards each other?

 What is the relationship between…………….?

 What did _________ mean when he said _________?

3) Key evaluative questions (The reality and value of the text are judged.)

Example:

 Why do you think the title is effective/ineffective?

 Do you think the text succeeded in…?

 Was the ending effective?

 How could the author further character development?

 Was the setting effectively established?
