Up to 2% available for those students who demonstrate mastery of the inquiry process through a quality chemistry
related science project, presented in the spring Expo.
Attendance
Students should attend classes prepared to work, bringing all materials required at that time. Late students must
knock and stand quietly in the hallway until there is a break in my teaching at which time the door will be opened.
Doing so will not disrupt lessons that have already began. Upon entering class, fill out a late slip, place it on my
computer and join the lesson already in progress. You are responsible for all work missed when you are not in
class. Clarification of missed work or assignments will occur either during a work period or outside of class time.
Testing
Chapter tests will be scheduled at least one week in advance and notice will be posted in the class. Make up
exams will not be written during class time and will be written at a mutually convenient time. Make up exams will
cover the same course material, but may not be the same as the original exam.
Daily and Hand-in Assignments
Students must complete all assignments given.
Anticipate numerous daily homework assessments. Success in this class is directly proportional to the amount of
time spent practising the skills taught. Lots of practice will be provided. Daily homework is not eligible for late
marks. It is assessed at the beginning of class and earns a mark proportional to the quality of work shown. Hand-in
assignments are due at the beginning of class, not half way through or later in the day to be credited with full
marks. Any work not submitted on time will be reduced by 25% of the original mark.
Assignments “collected” from students on days that they are absent, will be entered into Powerschool but will not
be included in the final grade. Assignments not completed will be given a mark of zero and entered into
Powerschool as “NHI”. Should a student wish to complete a “collected” or outstanding assignment for full marks
counting towards their final grade, they must complete it or a similar assessment, in front of the teacher outside of
class time. There will be two cut off dates (Homework Crush Days in October and December) after which time
collected and outstanding assignments will no longer be accepted for marks. This is one consequence for not being
organized.
If a lab/activity is missed, arrangements must be made to make up the lab/activity upon returning to class and
within a reasonable period of time.
Academic honesty is expected. All labs, assignments and homework must be unique and your own work.
Suspected plagiarism will receive severe penalties.
Leaving Class
Students needing to leave the room must sign out using the booklet located on the side table before leaving, and
again upon returning to class. The reason for leaving and the time out and back in must be recorded. Signing out
cannot occur at inappropriate times such as in the middle of instruction or during a lab. Permission is required from
the teacher before signing out can occur. Abuses will result in the loss of the privilege.
Technology/Hats
MP3 players and iPods are allowed to listen to music while students are working on daily tasks but not while I am
teaching. Please remove your headphones during lessons and adjust the volume so that only you are “enjoying”
your music. Tablets and ipads are only permitted once daily work has been completed and submitted to the
teacher. Cell phones are not permitted for any reason. None of these devices are permitted during quizzes or
on exam days and must be placed with your other belongings at the perimeter of the room. This is a hat free
classroom. Please remove/replace your hat in the hallway upon entering and leaving my room. Repeated requests
asking you to remove your hat will result in it being confiscated and returned at a later time.
Attendance Incentive
The purpose of the Attendance Incentive is to recognize those students who have made efforts to attend classes
regularly and punctually. The incentive earned is that the mark attained on the final assessment will not negatively
impact the grade earned for that class. Attendance Incentives are earned by students if all of the following criteria
are satisfied:
i) students have a total of seven or fewer absences in each individual class, per semester. A student is
deemed present when they physically attend their regularly scheduled course. Absences include
excused and school excused.
ii) students may have a total of three or fewer lates in each individual class, per semester. A late is defined
as any time a student is not present in their scheduled course before the bell sounds signifying the
beginning of class.
iii) students must have all assignments completed in a satisfactory manner (no zeros) with a maximum of
three late assignments over the entire semester.
iv) students must have a minimum of 50% in the selected course one week from the end of class. v)
unexcused absence from Advisory will result in review by School Administration and possible suspension.
Note: Any unexcused absence or a school suspension (for the current semester only) will lead to a loss of the
Incentive. Students eligible for the Attendance Incentive will be notified and confirmed at semester end.
Extra Help
All evaluated material should be discussed if any confusion or misunderstanding occurs. Assignments will not be
discussed on a one to one basis during class time, to avoid wasting the remaining class members’ time. One to one
discussion, along with extra help, may occur between 8:00 and 8:20 am, during lunch (preferred) and after school both by appointment only. This enables the teacher to be available to all students during class time. Students
coming to class outside of class time will sign into the “Help Book” to verify their attendance and commitment to
their learning.
Drinks (with secure lids) are acceptable in this class, however food is not! Please use garbage and recycling bins
appropriately. Please respect my room as I try and keep it neat, clean and inviting for others; please do the same.
Every opportunity will be provided to ensure that you can achieve to the best of your ability. If you work hard to help
yourself, I will work just as hard to help you.
