AP Human Geography Geography Storybook Final Project Due by Thursday, June 13 2013 A child’s storybook is not only a way to engage young people in reading and the imagination, but also a useful tool for introducing complex topics to young minds. In order to overcome the dearth of knowledge of Human Geography among kids, your group will create a lavishly illustrated storybook that conveys the important ideas in one area of the discipline. The challenge is to take your extensive knowledge of the subject, break it down into its most basic concepts, and find a way to tell the “story” of geography in a way that is equally entertaining and informative to young minds. Demonstrate knowledge of human geography by identifying and explaining key components and breaking them down to easily understandable depictions Produce an illustrated storybook aimed at children that presents and informs the younger public about an area of geographic analysis that we have explored this year Procedures Each 4-­‐5 person group will: 1.

Choose an area of human geography Identify the important people, theories and understandings in that area Figure out how to convey those concepts to younger children Create an illustrated child’s storybook that explains the geographic concepts Read the finished book to class in a meaningful way Assessments Project Proposal (10 Points): A brief description of planned topic and approach along with roles of group members. Book Outline (30 Points): A draft version of book with preliminary images, layout and text Storybook (60 points): A 15-­‐20 page children’s storybook that “tells the story” of your topic, richly illustrated and informative Reading Presentation (30 points): A meaningful reading of the book followed by a discuss with teacher and class on the book. Reflection (10 Points): A blog entry reflecting on the project and process.
