Reading fluency Strategy Strategy: Selecting an Appropriate Storybook Appropriate Grade Level: K-6 Procedures/Steps: In order to select a storybook that is appropriate to the ages and ability/achievement levels of the students, the teacher must use the following six questions: Is the book relevant to the child? Is the story predictable? Is the language level appropriate? Are the illustrations attractive and supportive of the text? Is the book an appropriate length for repeated reading? Does the book's story support the use of manipulatives in play? Comments and/or tips: Storybooks provide a useful format for modeling various levels of semantic complexity for children. Semantic complexity refers to the concrete or abstract nature of meaning in language. The six levels of semantic complexity range from concrete to abstract: Indication. Labeling. Description. Interpretation Inference. Metalanguage. Source: Bellon, M.L. & Ogletree, B.T. (2000). Repeated storybook reading as an instructional method. Intervention in School and Clinic, 36, 75-81.
