opportunities.
In line with our core business policy to support Australian
industry participation, the plan outlines the following key
objectives:
• Ensures Australian industry is provided Full, Fair and
Reasonable opportunity to participate in Ichthys Project
opportunities.
• Develop long term relationships, through the Ichthys Project,
to ensure innovation, effective cost management and valueadded solutions are delivered.
• Encourage and facilitate local business participation and
development in the oil and gas industry.
• Identify and increase the number of local people with the
skills to work in the oil and gas industry.
• Increase livelihood opportunities for local Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander communities through direct employment
and business engagement.
How Australia will Benefit
A number of economic and social benefits will flow from the
Ichthys Project directly to the Northern Territory and Australian
economies over the estimated 40-year life of the gas field.
Based on preliminary estimates, these include:
• Export income will be boosted by A$1.8 billion per year.
• Private household consumption in the Northern Territory
will increase by around 1.6% annually.
• Direct employment opportunities for more than 2,000
workers will be created during the construction phase, and
for about 300 employees at the gas processing facilities in
Darwin once operations have commenced.
• A diverse range of professional and semi-professional
employment opportunities will be created and which in turn
will encourage people to reside in the Territory.
• It will create the impetus to expand existing services and
industries, and to attract a number of new ones.
• Government revenues will be increased resulting in
enhanced capacity to provide community services, and a rise
in the spending power of the Territory’s population.
