MERIT BADGE DAY
LSU CAMPUS
To whom it may concern:
Merit Badge Day will be on Saturday, March 8, 2014, on the the LSU Campus. Check-in will take place in
Patrick Taylor Hall (formerly CEBA) and classes will be held in Patrick Taylor Hall and Turead Hall. You can
also go to http://campusmap.lsu.edu/map to get a more detailed map. Scouts taking Environmental Science
will be going to the LSU Lakes as part of their class; scouts taking Golf will be going to Golf course class; and,
scouts taking Geocaching wilI be going around campus to find the “treasure”. A permission slip is needed
giving permission for the scouts to do these activities on Campus. A permission slip is included at the bottom of
the registration form. The event is open to all Boy Scouts. Come out and have a day of enjoyment while
working on merit badges. Some merit badges are all day while some are only 2, 4, or 6 hours. Please make
note of the times. In some instances, the scout may be able to take up to three merit badges. Check-in will
be from 7:00 to 7:45 a.m. Classes will begin at 8:00 a.m. Lunch will be from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
SCOUTMASTERS/PARENTS—LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED FOR THE SCOUTS. IF YOU PLAN ON STAYING AND
WOULD LIKE TO HAVE LUNCH WITH THE SCOUTS, PLEASE INDICATE ON THE REGISTRATION FORM. THE COST FOR
ADULTS IS $5.00.
PARENTS—There are vending machines available; however, there is NOT a change machine available.
Please send single one dollar bills or coins with your scout if they wish to purchase items from the
vending machines.
The classes will end at 5:00 p.m. The cost will be $20.00, lunch included (see back page for refund policy).
Preregistration is required in order to have proper staffing. REGULAR PREREGISTRATION DEADLINE IS
FEBRUARY 20, 2014. After this, late registration runs from February 21-27 and the cost increases to $30.00.
Since some merit badges will be popular, it will be on a first-paid, first-served basis. There are some
prerequisites listed on the following pages for some of the merit badges. Please make sure that your Scout
reads this information as well as the merit badge pamphlet. Some of the merit badges will not be able to be
completed on this day. If anyone requires accommodation, please specify (seating, enlarged handouts, etc.).
Scouts are REQUIRED to bring the merit badge book to class. Please note any additional information listed for
some of the merit badges. Worksheets are available for use with the merit badges. Scouts can go to the
website www.meritbadge.org and print the worksheet(s) for the merit badge(s) they are taking and bring to
class. Some of the merit badges involve additional fees to cover the cost of supplies. Field uniform is
encouraged, but activity uniform (scout shorts and appropriate scout T-shirt) is acceptable. Scouts are
required to bring a copy of their current BSA medical form with them.
PARENTS/ADULT LEADERS—We are looking for help monitoring the hallways and classes to make sure the
scouts are where they are supposed to be. If you are able to help with this task please let us know.
The merit badges being offered are listed on the enclosed form along with the minimum/maximum class size
and the time schedule. Please look closely at the time slots to avoid conflicts. If you have any questions,

Council Refund Policy
The following policy statement is applicable to all Council and District events where a fee is collected.
This includes such events as Day Camps, Cub Resident Camp, Summer Camp, Winter Camp, training
courses, camporees, district events, etc.
1. Written refund requests will be considered only if received in the Pennington Scout Center ten (10)
days prior to the start of the activity.
2. Written refund requests submitted after the event will be considered only for personal illness or
family emergencies. No refund requests will be accepted after ten (10) days following the close of
the activity.
3. A service charge of twenty-five percent (25%) of the full activity fee will be assessed on all
refunds.
4. Refund checks will be issued within 30 days following the close of the event.
5. Fees are only transferable within the same unit to a Scout not currently registered for the activity.
PREREQUISITES/NOTES
FOR ALL MERIT BADGES—PLEASE OBTAIN THE MERIT BADGE
PAMPHLET AND READ IT BEFORE COMING TO THE CLASS(ES).
Prerequisites should be completed and brought to class with you.
AMERICAN HERITAGE
Scouts need to come to class prepared to answer Requirement 3c.
ANIMAL SCIENCE (HORSE OPTION)
Scouts should also be prepared to answer the questions to complete the requirement.
BIRD STUDY
Prerequisite: 8 (bring a picture of your project to class)
CITIZENSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY
Requirements 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 7, and 8 can be done beforehand and brought to class.
CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION
This badge can be completed if, and only if, requirements 2 and 3 have been completed prior to class, with the
exception of explanations or discussions with the counselor. For requirement 2, make sure any tour or visit
has been completed, and/or any research has been completed. Be sure to document your research or visit.
For requirement 3, have either your reading or watching done, and have noted at least two issues of national
importance. Be able to discuss how at least one of the issues affects you and your family.
CITIZENSHIP IN THE WORLD
Prerequisite: 4b, 7a, and 7b
COMPUTERS
A laptop or pad is not required but preferred. Microsoft Office or equivalent needs to be installed.
COOKING
Requirements #4, 6, 7d, and 8 cannot be completed on Merit Badge Day.
ELECTRICITY
Each scout will need to bring the merit badge book to class since there is material in it that will be covered.
Requirements #2 and 8 should be done prior to class and brought with them to class. For Requirement #9, the
scout will need to take a picture of their home electric meter, with all numbers clearly visible and easy to read,
and will need a copy of their home electric bill. Please make sure that all names, personal account numbers,
and home phone numbers are blotted out so that no personal information is visible.
ELECTRONICS
Scouts need to bring $5.00 to cover the cost of the kit.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
The course will cover all of the requirements except:
1.
First Aid Merit Badge (required)
2c. Scouts will be expected to meet with their family and prepare an emergency kit and present their kit
(picture) and plan to their Scoutmaster.
9.
Scouts will be expected to meet with their family and either inspect their home for hazards and/or develop
an escape plan in case of a fire AND present their hazards/plan to their Scoutmaster.
ENERGY
Requirement 4 cannot be completed in class. If completed at home prior, bring log to class for instructor to
confirm credit.
ENGINEERING
Students need to bring a small appliance/toy that is broken and can be taken apart.
If they can, under supervision, go to science/engineering websites to research information.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Prerequisite: Scouts need to review the merit badge book and draft a timeline of the history of Environmental
Science in America (Requirement 1) and become familiar with (write and bring to class) the definitions to be
defined in Requirement 2. Also be prepared to discuss Requirement 6 (career opportunities in
Environmental Science). Requirement 3e involves research on endangered species or completion of a
conservation project. If a Scout chooses to complete either requirement 3e(1) or 3e(2) prior to the course, the
counselor can review and approve the research during the course.
FAMILY LIFE
Requirements 3, 4, 5, and 6b cannot be completed at Merit Badge Day.
FIRST AID
Scouts must have completed the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class before being
allowed to sign up for this class.
FISH AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT
Requirements #5 and 7 cannot be completed at Merit Badge Day.
GEOCACHING
The boys will need either a GPS or a smart phone with a geocaching app. For the hike around LSU, a water
bottle, comfortable shoes, and, in case of rain, etc., proper weather gear. A light backpack (string bag would
be great) would help them to keep up with their gear.
GOLF
Scouts will NOT be able to complete at Merit Badge Day. They need to bring their own golf clubs and $5.00 to
cover the cost of range balls. Dress for outdoors, appropriate for golf course and current weather conditions.
Activity uniform and additional layers, if needed.
GRAPHIC ARTS
1. Design a printed piece (flier, T-shirt, program, form, etc.) and produce it. Explain your decisions for the
typeface or typefaces you use and the way you arrange the elements in your design. Explain which
printing process is best suited for printing your design. If desktop publishing is available, identify that
hardware and software would be appropriate for outputting your design.
2. Produce the design you created for requirement 3 using one of the following printing processes:
a. Offset lithography – Make a layout, and produce a plate using a process approved by yuour
counselor. Run the plate and print at least 50 copies.
b. Screen printing – Make a hand-cut or photographic stencil and attach it to a screen that you have
prepared. Make the screen and print at least 20 copies.
c. Electronic/digital printing – Create a layout in electronic form, download it to the press or printer,
and run 50 copies. If no electronic interface to the press or printer is available, you may print and
scan a paper copy of the layout.
d. Relief printing – Prepare a layout or set the necessary type. Make a plate or lock up the form. Use
this to print 50 copies.
PERSONAL MANAGEMENT
The instructor strongly encourages each scout to bring the merit badge worksheet (www.meritbadge.org) to
class. For requirements 1a, 1b2, and 1c, choose an item that your family might want to purchase that is
considered a major expense. Completion of requirement 9a-e prior to class is encouraged by the instructor.
For requirement 10a, choose and research a career you may want to enter after high school or college
graduation. Prepare an oral presentation based on 10b. Requirements 2, 8c, and 8d cannot be completed at
Merit Badge Day. If completed in advance, bring to class and, if time allows, the instructor will review.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Prerequisites: Bring a camera to this class if you have access to one. Also, complete either A or B below prior
to coming to class. Each scout will be provided the time to present their images or slide show during the class.
Scouts choosing to do a slide show can bring their presentation on a laptop or e-mail their presentation to
gfzim2@gmail.com.
A. Produce a picture story using the photojournalistic technique of documenting an event. Share your plan with
your counselor and get your counselor’s input and approval before you proceed. Then, using either a film
camera or a digital camera, produce your approved picture story. Process your images and select eight to 12
images that best tell your story. Arrange your images in order, then mount the prints on a poster board. If you
are using digital images, you may create a slide show on your computer or produce printouts for your poster
board. Share your picture story with your counselor.
B. Choose a topic that interests you to photograph for an exhibit or display. Get your counselor’s approval,
then photograph (digital or film) your topic. Process your images. Choose 20 of your favorite images and
mount them on poster board. Share your display with your counselor. If you are using digital images, you may
create a slide show on your computer or produce printouts for your poster board.
PROGRAMMING
Scouts must be 13 years or older and must bring their own laptop. Requirements 1, 3, and 6 must be done
prior to class. Bring your Cyber Chip to class.
SPACE EXPLORATION
Students are required to bring $12.00 to class to cover the cost of the rockets and engines. Requirements 2,
5, and 7 must be completed prior to class. Students are required to stay for the entire day because rockets will
be launched at the end of the day.
