The Diary of Anne Frank Program

DInECnOR'S NqfEs!
lwould liketo tellyou a little about howAnne's diary has been shared since she died. ln the summer of 1945 Miep, who had rescued the
diary after the Frank's arrest, handed it to Otto. Anne had already re-written her diary once and left out parts of her first writings. Otto
used the second unfinished version but added parts ofAnne's original when he published it as "The SecretAnnexe", Anne's own title,
in 1947. The authenticity of the Diary has been confirmed legally in court. ln 1955 it was adapted as a play by Frances Goodrich and
Albert Hackett. Although he had given permission, itwas too painfulfor Otto to watch. ltwon the 1956 Pulitzer Prize and TonyAward. ln
1986 afterOtto's death the Dutch Government released The Critical Edition ofthe diary which included allofAnne's writings. The play
was rewritten in 1997 byWendy Kesselman and includes some ofAnne'sdiary not in the originalplay.
ln our staging, we are portraying the annexe's three levels. The hall and Frank bedrooms were on the first floor of the annexe. The
kitchen and Van Daan sleeping quarterswere on the second floorandwe have a smallsection ofthe aftic.

I have wanted to direct the original play for a long time, having read Anne's diary when I was a teenager. When I
discovered this later adaptation lwas excited to submit it to The BasinTheatre, twenty years afterthey had staged the
original.
This is the 7th play.l have directed at The Basin, most recently'Kid Stakes' in 2013. I also direct for several other
companies and occasionally venture on stage. lf we connect our audience to Anne's diary and to those who lived in
and supported theAnnexe... if we put you in touch with memories ofa time we should neverforgel... if we help bring a
young girl'sdesireto share herwriting with the world... if we do allthese with integrity. lwillbe happy.

Juliana Smithton is a successful neurologist whose life seems to be coming
unhinged. Her husband has filed for divorce, her daughter has eloped with a
much older man and her own health is in jeopardy. ln this brilliantly crafted
work, nothing is as it seems. Piece by piece, a mystery unfolds as fact blurs
with fiction, pastcollides with presentand the elusive truth aboutJuliana boils
to the surface.
