Being prepared means bringing a blue or black pen, student agenda book, your SUPA U.S. History folder or binder, and other SUPA U.S. materials to EVERY class. Being prepared also means being ready to learn and participate in class every day. Students should be in their seats, ready to complete the RAP and copy the homework into their agenda as soon as class begins. Materials: Binder or Folder – YOU are responsible for keeping your class notes, activities, and outlines organized. Supplementary reading – Throughout the year you will be assigned reading assignments beyond the textbook. You must bring them back and forth between class and home. Lined loose-leaf paper (with refill paper at home) Student agenda Home folder/binder – Create a safe space at home to keep older course material to be used at a later date to study for final exams and the U.S. History and Government Regents Exam. Pens, pencils, and highlighter (You are EXPECTED to always have a writing tool. If Mrs. Louer has to loan you a writing tool more than once a quarter you will lose points from your overall grade) Expectation #2: Students at Henninger High School are to meet the following expectations at all times: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be A Successful Learner. Expectations #5: Students are expected to attend every class. Class time will be used for lecture, guided document analysis, and discussion of required course readings and research assignments. Class time together cannot be duplicated during advisement. Frequently missing class time will place you at a significant disadvantage and could negatively impact your grade. Expectation #4: Students are expected to complete all assignments (RAP’s, classwork, research papers, tests, quizzes, and homework) on time. Late work will result in a loss of 5 points each day an assignment is not turned in. When a student is absent from class they must complete any assignments they missed within the time limits given by Mrs. Louer. It is the student’s responsibility to bring Mrs. Louer a LEGAL excuse for the absence and collect any missed assignments. Missed/Make-up work will only be given out during advisement located in room 223. At the end of the course students will take the U.S. History and Government Regents Exam. Passing is a graduation requirement. Expectation #5: Cheating and Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is defined as: taking “ideas, writings, etc. from another and passing them off as one’s own.” (Webster New World Dictionary of the American Language Second College Edition (Cleveland, 1980, 1087.) If you are unsure if you are plagiarizing, please seek assistance from Mrs. Louer or another Henninger teacher. Being caught cheating or plagiarizing will result in strict disciplinary action, not limited to course failure and loss of Syracuse University credit. Class Participation (35%) You are expected to participate in class daily. This includes completing class notes and activities, answering teacher/classmate posed questions, asking questions, cooperating in groups, completing RAPS, homework, and following the four Henninger student expectations. Homework is assigned daily. Homework assignments are designed to help you prepare for upcoming class discussions and synthesize covered material. **Regularly missing class (3 or more times) will significantly lower your class participation grades. ** Tests (25%) We will conclude every unit Extra Credit Some extra credit assignments are with a unit test. Writing and Research Papers (25%) Throughout the course, you will be asked to complete several independent 2-5 page writing assignments. Quizzes (15%) Quizzes will be given routinely. Quizzes will assess your completion and level of understanding of the readings assigned outside of class. Expect at least one quiz a week. Regularly attending advisement with Mrs. Louer can raise your grade. Each day that you attend you will earn ½ point toward your quarter grade. You may earn up to 5 extra points to your overall grade by regularly attending, and working in, advisement. Mrs. Louer is always available Tuesday-Thursday during advisement to help you with your work. Mrs. Louer is also available from 7:00-7:45 am on Wednesdays. Advisement is in room 223. Monday & Friday may be available by appointment. Grade Reporting SCSD You will receive a numeric quarterly grade for the course. Based on your performance and hard work, grades will range from 50-100. Syracuse University SUPA U.S. History is actually the combination of two semester courses offered at Syracuse University, HIS 101 and HIS 102. You will receive an overall grade for each course. HIS 101 will be graded in January, and HIS 102 will be graded in June. Your overall semester be an average of your SCSD quarterly grades. HIS 101 grade will be an average of marking period 1 & 2, and HIS 102 grade will be an average of marking period 3 & 4. Syracuse University grades are letter grades. A 95-100 B+ 87-90 C+ 77-79 D+ 67-69 F 0-62 A- 91-94 B 83-86 C 73-76 B- 80-82 C- 70-72 D 63-66
