Geologists are searching for petroleum in oceans all over the world. They look for petroleum
in places where it has been begun forming millions of years ago. Ancient continental shelves are
such places.
Petroleum forms from the remains of tiny organisms, such are those that are plentiful on
continental shelves. For petroleum to form, the organisms must be buried by sediment from the
continent before the organisms decay. Rivers carry the sediments onto to continental shelf. The
water above the sediment must be calm enough so that the sediment does not wash away. The
