CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET USING A DIAL UP CONNECTION You need to contact your Internet Service Provider for helping setting up your computer to connect to the Internet. The Help Desk does not provide that support. When you call your Internet Service Provider, ask to speak with someone who knows Macintosh computers. INSTEAD OF INSTALLING INTERNET SOFTWARE ON THE STUDENT IBOOKS, FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS TO CONNECT TO YOUR ISP. To complete these directions, you will need to know: • Your user name • Your password • The phone number your computer dials to connect to the network (You can get this from your ISP • The address of your service provider (earthlink.net, erols.com, etc.) USER NAMES AND PASSWORDS FOR SOME OF THE MOST COMMON INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS INT EH RICHMOND AREA CAN BE FOUND AT THE END OF THIS DOCUMENT. Directions for Dialup Users 1. Plug in the phone cable to your iBook. 1. There is one location on iBooks this year- AUTOMATIC. Automatic has the ability to know which way to connect by the cable that is plugged in. If you plug in your modem (phone) cable, it will automatically select the modem settings. If you plug in an Ethernet cable, it will automatically select settings for DSL or cable modem. If you have nothing plugged in and a wireless network is available, it will automatically pick up the wireless network signal. 2. Open the Macintosh Hard Drive. 3. Open the Applications Folder 4. Open INTERNET CONNECT. 5. Click on the INTERNAL MODEM button in the toolbar at the top of the screen. The following machine will appear: CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET USING A DIAL UP CONNECTION 6. Click on the drop down menu beside CONFIGURATION and select EDIT CONFIGURATIONS. The following screen will appear: 7. Type a name for your new configuration. In this example I typed EARTHLINK. You may name your configuration whatever you would like. 8. Enter the phone number that your computer dials to connect to your ISP. Note: Some ISP’s require you to enter the area code as well. 9. Enter your account name and password. Check with your service provider to be sure you have entered your account name correctly. Different service providers use different configurations for user name. For instance, earthlink uses a true user name (example- droethke). MSN uses msn/droethke. AT&T uses droethke@at&t.net and so on. 10. Click on the drop down menu beside MODEM and select APPLE INTERNAL 56K MODEM (v.90). 11. Click OK. Your information will be entered in Internet Connect and your screen will look like this: CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET USING A DIAL UP CONNECTION 12. Click Connect to connect to the Internet. You can watch your computer connect to the Internet by looking to the left of the Connect button. You should see a message that says: 13. When you are connected to the Internet, Internet Connect will change to the following screen: 14. Close Internet Connect. Quit Internet Connect 15. You do not have to open Internet Connect after you have set up your modem connection. Click on the phone icon in the menulets bar in the upper righthand corner of your computer. Click on Connect. 16. If you have problems connecting, click on Open Internet Connect. Most connecting problems are because of incorrect user names or passwords.
