Cordis Academy is an academic program that integrates the applicable historical time period with core academic class instruction and an eye toward better qualifying children for advanced education.
The word Cordis comes from Latin and means heart. At Cordis Academy, we want foremost to minister to the heart of each child and bring them closer to God while guiding them to “… Love the Lord our God with all of your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Luke 10:27. We also find in the word
Cordis the word cord, a twisting of fibers together to make a rope. In Ecclesiastes 4:12 it says that “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” For Cordis Academy the three cords represent the ACADEMICS, the ARTS, and the HEART; each one being a vital part of a child’s education.
Cordis Academy combines the best parts of several homeschool philosophies with a creative twist to develop students who are well-educated, historically grounded, well read, independent learners who can think logically, solve problems creatively, and approach life in a complete and integrated manner. We believe by emphasizing learning from a whole-hearted and individual standpoint, Cordis Academy can aid busy homeschooling parents in instructing and training the heart, soul AND mind of each student.
Each year, Cordis Academy for K-6 th grade students follows the same historical time period that Master’s Academy will be studying. For 7 th -12 th grade students, the designated time periods covered are more compact. Students attending Cordis
Academy do NOT have to be enrolled in Master’s Academy fine arts classes. However, we strongly recommend that your child(ren) also be enrolled in one of our fine arts program. We believe that integrating the arts provides the student with a well-rounded education. At Cordis Academy, we provide a hands-on, creative environment within the classroom. Instead of the students merely learning facts in each subject that are not related, they are totally immersed into the historical time period with as many subjects as possible thus encouraging an excitement for learning.
At Cordis Academy, we offer the students the opportunity to be educated in a Creative Classical Education environment which uses history and classic literature as a framework behind all of the academic subjects while taught with a biblical worldview. Cordis Academy uses a creative classroom teaching style which encourages deductive reasoning skills and engaging student interactions. Students are able to think and express themselves logically in both a verbal and written format.
This approach to education helps the student assimilate and retain information for long term use in higher education. The students will be taught using hands-on, investigative, and interactive activities while also experiencing learning through reading, listening, discussion, and writing. The arts (music, art, and drama) are used as a creative means to teach within the classroom. New research on how people learn indicates that effective learning happens when the student is exposed to new information and is actively engaged in the new information given to them. In a creative environment, students will be able to listen, explore, discover, practice, and use what they are learning so that the new material is retained by the student.
While integrating these teaching methods into the classroom, our teachers provide an adventurous classroom environment in order to engage the students in learning as well as to build the student’s confidence, fostering trust, and encouraging them to become better students. Our objective is for the students to enjoy learning and to understand what they are learning. The results of learning in a Creative Classical Education approach: meaningful learning, greater comprehension, retention of information, and an interesting class environment to learn in.
The National Standards for each subject matter and grade level are taught while using these teaching methods within the classroom.
 Cordis Academy is a college prep program giving the students a well rounded education by including the study of the arts and academics.
Cordis Academy meets two days per week for 32 weeks and can be used in conjunction with attendance in Master’s Academy of Fine Arts, Masterkey Academy, and Portfolio Academy classes to give children a well-rounded education. Students will receive instruction in their core academic classes: Language Arts writing, literature, grammar, (phonics for K-5 thru 3 rd grade),
Math, Science, History/Geography and Foreign Language. Students will receive assignment sheets and sealed testing information for the week at the end of the class day. It is expected that all work and tests be returned the next class day. All high school classes are accredited and students receive an accredited high school diploma upon graduation from our program.
Please note that any new high school student entering into our high school program after 9 th grade will be charge $250 in accreditation services in order for us to back accredit previous years. Class size is limited.

Spiritual Emphasis for the Ancient Period - The Roman Road
During the Ancient Period, the Romans were known for being great engineers. They constructed aqueducts, walls of fortification, theaters, coliseums, and roads. All over Italy and the Roman Empire the Romans built about fifty thousand miles of roads. Many of these roads are still used today, but how did they build these roads so that they would last so long?
Roman engineers supervised the Roman soldiers who actually did the construction of these roads. These roads were built in layers. The dimensions of these roads were about fifteen feet in width, and three feet in height. The first thing that the soldiers had to do was to dig out the width and depth of the road, thus getting rid of the dirt that was not needed. Just like
Jesus gets rid of our sin. “There is no one righteous, not even one.” Romans 3:10 Sin dwells within each one of us . “For all have s inned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 Sometimes, it was easy to dig the road out, but other times there were big rocks that needed to be dug out. As the road is built, there are different layers of different rocks that are laid over the dirt to make the road durable. First, they place a layer of rubble, next a layer of slab set in mortar, then a layer of concrete and stones. Last they place a layer of hard stones, or blocks of lava, which were fitted closely together so that there were no cracks or seams. As we study the construction of the Roman Road we see the importance of constructing our lives with layer upon layer of God’s word in our hearts. Along with Romans 3:10 and 3:23, we will weave the following verses into the lesson plans so each student will have a good understanding of the Roman Road – God’s message of salvation:

K-6 th grade: In conjunction with the Ancient Period (Creation to 476 AD) history taught at Master’s Academy, students will be further instructed on the historical events of the Ancient Period on historical topics that Master’s Academy does not cover.
The teacher will bring to life the historical events of the time period through various creative teaching methods. Along with the history, there will also be a strong emphasis on geography. History reading assignments will be given each week.

Government and Economics: 12 th grade
ABeka textbooks will be used to cover these two semester long classes. The Government class will give the students a firm foundation to become informed, responsible citizens and voters in today’s world. During the course of the semester, the
Constitution, the government it established, and the rights and privileges it guarantees the American people will be studied in depth. Students will also learn about federalism and government at the state and local levels. The Economic Class will concentrate on free enterprise capitalism in a free market economy. The Biblical views of work, wealth, and stewardship appear throughout the text, helping students to understand the proper economic roles of individual producers and consumers as well as that of the government. The stark contrast between the market economy—the cornerstone of prosperity in the
United States—and the command economy—the hallmark of fiscal failure in Communist countries—is graphically presented in illustration of the economic principles that govern all societies. Essential concepts such as competition in the marketplace and private ownership of capital are discussed from a conservative perspective.

K-6 th grade students will have a designated Christian based textbook to follow in their scientific research of the specific unit or units that they will be studying all year long. For this age group, we want to have the students concentrate on one or two scientific topics a year in order to closely examine and learn about that unit so that they have a deep understanding of that unit. Lab time is included in as many classes as possible. Each month a scientist of the month and their major contributions during the appropriate historical time period will also be incorporated into the classroom. Zoology: Aquatic Animals; Classical – Anatomy & Medicine/Health; Romantic – Simple Machines & Physics and Chemistry;

For the 2014-2015 school year, the students will explore the exciting world of Geology and Botany . The textbooks for K-
6 th grade will be Exploring Creation with Botany by Jeannie Fulbright and The Geology Book by Dr. John D. Morris .
Homework assignments will be hands on project oriented mixed with textbook reading for gathering information as well as some worksheets. Lab time will be incorporated into the class time instruction every week. Homework reading assignments will be assigned each week. Class time: 30-45 minutes per meeting day
7 th grade: Life Science. This class introduces the living world: cellular biology, genetics, botany, zoology, ecology, and human body are some of topics that will be covered during the year. All these topics are taught from a biblical worldview. In class lab time will help reinforce and complement the material being studied. BJU Life Science textbook will be used. Class Time: 1 hour per meeting day
8 th grade: General Science. The course covers such topics as the scientific method, designing experiments, simple machines, archaeology, geology, paleontology, biology, and human anatomy and physiology. Its scope, therefore, is quite wide. There are many hands-on experiments that will be done during lab time in class. BJU General Science textbook will be used. Class Time:
1 hour per meeting day
9 th grade: Physical Science. We use the ABeka Science of the Physical Creation for our textbook. The topics covered during the year are – Meteorology, Oceanography, Chemistry, Geology, and Physics. There are many hands-on experiments that will be done during lab time in class. Class Time: 1 hour per meeting day
10 th -12 th grade: The Apologia textbooks are used in class for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Anatomy, etc. Lab time is incorporated into the class teaching time. Class Time: 1 hour per meeting day

For K-6 th grade various manipulative materials and activities/games are used to introduce the various mathematical concepts for each week. Real life mathematical application opportunities are given to the students. The teacher uses pertinent activities and centers in class to reinforce the new concepts. Homework for the rest of the week from their math textbook will be assigned to the students.
7 th - 12 th grade math offered will consist of Math 7, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Advanced
Mathematics, etc.. New concepts will be introduced in class as well as reviewing previous concepts to allow for mastery in math. Homework assignments are assigned for the rest of the week. Class time: 1 hour per meeting day

Composition/Grammar
K thru 3 rd graders will have age appropriate writing assignments for them to develop from K-5: writing a sentence; 1 st grade: writing more complex sentences, 2 nd grade: writing a paragraph, to 3 rd grade: writing three paragraphs. The teacher will also focus on helping the students develop ideas for writing, organizing their writing, sharing their feelings in their writing, and using descriptive words in their writing. Punctuation, spelling and grammar will also be emphasized in class. Various homework assignments will be given to reinforce the concepts covered in class. The different forms of writing appropriate for their age level will be covered in class such as: descriptive, creative, narrative, response to literature, persuasive, research, expository. We will be using The Write Source Handbook as our textbook.
4 th -12 th grade students will develop the six main traits of writing: 1. Ideas (focusing on a specific topic with ideas and details to support topic); 2. Organization (beginning, middle, ending); 3. Voice (a special way a writer shares ideas and feelings); 4.
Word Choice (using strong verbs, specific nouns, colorful adjectives); 5. Sentence Fluency (beginning sentences in different ways and have different lengths); 6. Conventions (punctuation and grammar).
Students will be taught how to write descriptive, narrative, expository, persuasive, creative, research writings and a response to literature writing as well as a compare and contrast writing for 8 th graders. Because class sizes are small, teachers are able to give individual feedback and support for improved writing skills. These different writing assignments will be spread throughout the different subjects: literature, science, and history and spread out throughout the course of the year.
The composition teacher will be working with the different subject teachers and monitoring the writing in all the different subject areas. Greek and Latin root words will be taught to expand their vocabulary words. Vocabulary words from literature, history, and science classes will also be focused on in each class. Homework composition assignments will vary each week and is dependent on the subject the assignment is for. Weekly grammar homework will be assigned to the different grade levels.
We will be using The Write Source Handbook as our textbook.
Literature: K-2 nd grade: During class time, students will have attend story time where the teacher will read historical fiction, biographies, as well as read age appropriate books that were written during the time period.
3 rd -6 th grade: Students will read age appropriate literature that was written during the time period.

Both the current College Prep classes and the Honors classes prepare students for life after high school, a primary difference between the classes is that students in Honors do more independent reading and write more essays and major papers.
College Prep Class: English Department teachers direct interactive classes so the students are engaged and directly participate in their learning. The College Prep classes engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of literature while becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes.
Classes stress the importance of effective oral and written expression and utilize a range of teaching and assessment techniques. College Prep offers its students a full, stimulating curriculum that meets the academic requirements of colleges and universities.
 Students who begin in the College Prep program may petition to move to the Honors Program the following year.
Honors Class: English Department teachers direct interactive classes so the students are engaged and directly participate in their learning. The Honors Grammar/Composition/Literature course is designed to help students become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts. The writing instruction focuses on developing coherence, unity, precision, structure, and stylistic maturity.
By their writing and reading in this course, students should become aware of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects. Students will be challenged in the ability to spontaneously write an organized and developed essay that demonstrates a strong and expressive command over the English language.
 Students may choose to take the AP examination at the end of the course.
 Students should be above average students of English and be interested in maximizing their preparation for college.
They must have a 3.0 GPA along with their instructor’s permission to sign up for the class.
 Parents of 9 th grade students who may be interested in this program must request a meeting with administration.
Past grades and samples of writing may be requested. General academic and social maturity will be taken into consideration when considering this request.
K-6 th grade: We introduce Spanish in a hands-on approach to teaching a foreign language to the students utilizing the curriculum Teach them Spanish ! Class time: 20-30 minutes per meeting day
7 th - 8 th grade: Introductory level foreign language classes are offered to our 7 th -8 th graders. Spanish A and B as well as French
