The CFES/FCST Earth Science Advocacy and Advisory Panel
CFES/FCST is very pleased to announce the members of its Earth Science Advocacy and
Advisory Panel. The five individuals who have agreed to serve on this panel are each eminent
and undisputed leaders in their respective fields. The Panel, chaired by the CFES/FCST Past
President, will advise the CFES/FCST Board on strategic matters both individually and as a
group and will advance the importance of Earth Science. The Panel is independent. Panel
members speak on the basis of their personal expertise and experience.
The Panel members are:
Petroleum Industry: Clay Riddell.
Clay Riddell began his career as a geologist with Chevron in the late 1950’s, and started his own
company 10 years later. Paramount focused on natural gas ……. (needs more) He is past
President of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and part owner of the Calgary
Flames and plays an important role in many charities.
Mining industry: Eira Thomas
Eira Thomas is a diamond exploration expert. She is CEO of Stornoway Inc. She studied
geology at the University of Toronto and has worked in the mining industry since graduation.
She became best known for the discovery of the highest grade cluster of diamond pipes in the
world, now the Diavik Diamond Mine in NWT.
Academia: Phil Currie
Phil Currie is a paleontologist, best known for his ground-breaking research on dinosaurs. Phil is
now at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, but until recently curator of geology at the Royal
Tyrell Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller, of which he was one of the founders. He has
worked on fossil digs around the world and found some of the first feathered dinosaur remains.

Geoscience Literacy and Heritage: Roberta Bondar has degrees in agriculture, zoology,
pathology and neurobiology, as well as a medical degree. In 1983, she was one of six Canadian
astronauts selected to train at NASA and in 1992 observed Earth from the Space Shuttle
Discovery. She headed medical research afterwards, in addition to becoming a successful
photographer. Since 2003 Dr. Bondar is Chancellor of Trent University. Order of Canada
Government: Jim Franklin has more than 35 years of experience as a geologist. He is best
known for his efforts as director and Chief Scientist of the Geological Survey of Canada, where
he was responsible for coordinating GSC's entire domestic and international scientific program.
He is a Past President of both the Geological Association of Canada and the Society of
Economic Geologists. Order of Canada
