FLORHAM PARK SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER- OCTOBER 2012 LABOR DAY SEPTEMBER 3 FIRST DAY OF AUTUMN SEPTEMBER 22 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4 DAYLIGHT SAVINGS ENDS SET CLOCKS BACK ONE HOUR FLORHAM PARK SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB Senior Citizens Center 111 Ridgedale Ave. Florham Park, NJ 07932 Phone Numbers Senior Center Main No. 973-520-8984 Senior Center Office 973-520-8983 Elective Officers President: Dennis Callahan 973-360-1875 Treasurer: Rose Dalton Vice President: Charlene Sozansky 973-822-3145 Secretary: Angela Landon 973-845-9093 973-765-0022 The Presidents Message Dear Friends, I hope you're having an enjoyable, healthy summer. After a mild winter promising lower heating bills, we're in the midst of a very warm summer, which will have us give the savings on heating back to pay for higher air conditioning bills. Such is life! From the Club's perspective it's been an enjoyable summer. For the second consecutive summer I've hosted social meetings, which those who attended found quite enjoyable. Our June meeting featured Boiling Springs Bank filling us in on their affiliates program, and providing a nice lunch of sandwiches and cookies. In July we learned about Juniper Village, brunching on bagels & fruit, and Edward Jones provided an update on the investment climate with a nice lunch of sandwiches, salads, cookies, & beverages. The highlight of the summer will no doubt be the Second Annual Police Department Seniors Barbecue in August, and our last summer meeting will be hosted by Wynwood with refreshments and a singer to provide entertainment. I have enjoyed putting this program together for those who stayed in the area, and would be happy to continue facilitating this when I step down next year after 4 years as your president if that's approved by my successor and the Board. Those 4 years have flown by all too fast. You can't please all the people all the time and I know that I haven't, but I've done my best and I genuinely appreciate your kind positive feedback and well-intended criticism which was truly constructive and supportive of me and the Club. And while I won't be your President much longer, the best is yet to come, that being Our Club's 50th Anniversary. I feel truly blessed to be in my job at this time, and am really excited by the event. We'll have a lovely luncheon at the Park Avenue Club, entertainment by Pete Limone, a very nice keepsake for all attendees, comments from some past presidents, sharing of letters and proclamations from government leaders, and the installation at the Senior Center of a bronze plaque commemorating the occasion. In late July we already have over 150 reservations. If you haven't yet booked a reservation, please send me your $10 per attending member right away. I would hate to see anyone shut out of this special event. Enjoy what's left of the summer, join us at the Senior Center when you can, and get ready for a memorable Anniversary Bash on September 12th. God Bless you all! When you leave your car you'll walk down the hall to an elevator and go down 1 level. You also have an option to drop off passengers at the door to our ballroom (actually a large white tent accommodating 250 guests) before you drive up the ramp to the main entrance to valet park your vehicle. You will be served a duet entree, actually 2 entrees, one chicken in port wine sauce, and the other herb stuffed sole. If you don't want one of the entrees, tell your server that you don't care for one of the entrees, and you'd like a double portion of the other. Soft Drinks are included with your meals. For anything alcoholic you will have to buy a ticket at the table near the bar. Please Note: Dennis must have your checks by Mon. Aug. 27. Have a great time! ` Photo Op At our Fiftieth Anniversary we will have a professional photographer taking photos. There is no charge to the Club or to you, unless you want copies of the photos. There are a few packages giving a larger photo or a few smaller ones. The charge will be $30 if you order your photos at our Banquet, and $33 if you order them afterwards. This is an opportunity to put your "Glad Rags" on and get some nice photos for yourself or loved ones at a far better price than at a studio. Hospitality Committee Help Wanted! Please consider getting together with a couple of friends, and taking on the role of the Hospitality Committee. It would be a shame to begin our second fifty years by ending the coffee and tea service enjoyed by all meeting attendees. But that's where we'll be at our September 26 meeting unless one or more of you steps up to address this need. In Memoriam Let us take a few moments of reflection for the following members who have departed: Sam Inamorata Robert Gregorio Margaret Sieb (Sister of Richard Metro) Earle Wallo MCCoOPO ` At a recent meeting, Roma Oster, an Attorney, gave information regarding three very important documents everyone needs. First, a will which names the person to handle your affairs after death, next - a living will also known as a Health Care Directive and third, a Durable Power of Attorney. If you own out of state property, particularly in NY or Florida, she recommended that it be put in a "trust" as those states have very high probate laws. You can open a Boiling Springs Bank account for your grandchildren and great grandchildren up to age 18 with a $10 deposit, and the bank will add another $10 to the account. Great Deal!! When you do this, please ask them to make this account affiliated with the Florham Park Senior Citizens Club. Just a few more accounts and we will have enough affiliates for the bank to pay the club a small percentage of the total affiliated assets each quarter, with no negative impact on your account's earned interest. Please help make that happen! Want to Get Into Shape?? Joint Care (30 Vreeland Rd; Florham Park) offers physical therapy (PT), and a gym available to the public. They offer a full array of cardio and weight equipment, and a knowledgeable staff of physical therapists. As I announced last Spring, Joint Care had offered Florham Park Senior Citizens Club and AARP Chapter 5109 members a discount, reducing their orientation fee from $75 to $50, and their monthly exercise fee from $40 to $30, and introducing a $50 couples rate. The club offered these special rates hoping to attract new customers from our organizations, but to date, with the exception of yours truly, they have had no new members from our organizations, they had complaints from clients who didn't belong to our organizations, and they lost money by reducing rates to existing customers. Accordingly they will revert to the previous pricing at the end of August.. The owners of Joint Care will seek ways to add value to our members that make better business sense. My personal experience is that Joint Care is my first PT experience in 5 attempts that produced a beneficial exercise program without throwing my back into muscle spasm. If you ever need physical therapy, or are shopping for a gym, you might benefit by choosing Joint Care. If you need physical therapy, they can design a customized exercise program after PT using the same machines you used during PT. Similarly a gym member, who subsequently needs PT, will be able to use in PT the same equipment they were familiar with from their exercise program. Both scenarios give you a head start. For further questions call Joint Care at 973-660-1000. Dennis Callahan Health Watch Heart Attack Signs, and How to Survive If You Are Struck When Alone A heart attack results from a sudden blockage of a coronary artery. Typical symptoms are a severe pain in the chest that radiates out into your arm and up your jaw. If alone and your heart is beating improperly and you begin to feel faint you may have only 10 seconds before losing consciousness. Do not panic but start coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough. The cough must be deep and prolonged as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm.
