PROVIDENCE MEDICAL CENTER – LABORATORY STAFF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST JOB DESCRIPTION I. JOB SUMMARY: A. The Staff Medical Technologist performs clinical laboratory procedures, specimen collection for laboratory analysis, clinical test reporting, quality assurance, quality control and instrument troubleshooting and maintenance. B. The Staff Medical Technologist performs and assists in the supervision of technicians engaged in various chemical, hematological, microscopic and bacteriological tests. C. The Staff Medical Technologist performs all blood bank procedures. D. The Staff Medical Technologist performs and assists in the supervision of Phlebotomist/Secretarial staff. E. The Staff Medical Technologist orders equipment and supplies to maintain adequate stock as assigned. F. The Staff Medical Technologist assists in training and orientation of new laboratory personnel. G. The Staff Medical Technologist takes emergency call for the laboratory department on an equal time basis. II. JOB RELATIONSHIPS: A. Responsible to: 1. Laboratory Supervisor 2. Medical Director 3. Medical Director 4. Pathologists 5. Nursing personnel 6. Physicians 7. Administrator 8. All Hospital Employees 9. Patients ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: A. Performs routine and special laboratory tests i. Responsible for accuracy of examinations and analysis to assist physicians in correctly diagnosing a disease process and/or progress. Proficiency in the following areas are required: 1. Routine and special hematology 2. Routine and special chemistry 3. Serology 4. Blood Bank 5. Urinalysis 6. Bacteriology 7. Parasitology 8. Coagulation 9. Assist pathologist with bone marrow procedures ii. Recognize test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Provides assistance to laboratory coworkers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the Laboratory Supervisor or pathologist. iii. Calls critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria. iv. Prepares test reports legibly. Initials and dates own work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications. B. Performs quality control tests. i. Runs quality control tests according to procedure and maintains appropriate data recording. ii. Analyzes quality control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the Laboratory Supervisor as required. Documents action taken. iii. Resolves quality control problems prior to reporting out patient results. III. IV. iv. Participates in testing survey studies for proficiency. C. Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting. i. Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules. ii. Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, problems, and corrective actions taken. iii. Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in the resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the Laboratory Supervisor as required. iv. Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to the Laboratory Supervisor. D. Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area. i. Prepares specimens and paperwork for referral. ii. Maintains laboratory files in appropriate manner. iii. Copies reports and sends/phones/faxes reports to appropriate destination. iv. Maintains tally records of work performed for workload and statistical reporting purposes. May be assigned responsibility for monthly collation of tallies. E. Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. i. Performs specimen collection and processing duties as needed or assigned and according to policies established in the phlebotomy area. ii. Attends regular department staff meetings and inservice training. iii. Attends and participates in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education programs and departmental policies and procedures. iv. Assumes responsibility for operation of the clinical laboratory in the absence of the Laboratory Director. v. Is partially responsible for performance of laboratory personnel and efficient operation of the laboratory. vi. Responsible for care and safety of patients when in their presence. vii. Observes laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices. viii. Keeps work area neat and clean, and restocks daily supplies. ix. Assists in inventory control and requisition of supplies. x. Participates in quality assurance activities. xi. Shares in covering emergency call for the laboratory. QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A. Education 1. Bachelor’s degree and successful completion of an accredited Medical Technology program. 2. ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized Medical Technology certification or categorical certification preferred. (Note: Those with categorical certification will be restricted to the discipline in which they hold the categorical certification. B. Training and Experience 1. An employee training program offered by this facility must be completed upon employment and annually thereafter. 2. May periodically be required to attend staff meetings and in-services. C. Job Knowledge 1. The Staff Medical Technologist must understand the use and limitations of the laboratory equipment and be familiar with standard laboratory procedures and techniques. 2. S/he must have a basic knowledge of various specialty fields of laboratory work and is capable of typing, testing, cross matching, and storing of blood. 3. S/he must have a good working knowledge of anatomy, understand principles of physics, electricity and electronics, and be able to set up and operate equipment. 4. S/he must be able to post all results of tests into daily logbooks and patient report forms. 5. S/he is responsible for handling and sending specimens for referral to the reference laboratory. 6. S/he must have sufficient knowledge of psychology and patient care to deal with all types and conditions of patients. Must have good communication skills. 7. S/he must be familiar with supervisory and administrative policies and procedures. D. Physical Qualifications 1. Visual and tactile acuity sufficient to perform phlebotomy. 2. Must be able to respond to audible alarms used in laboratory testing. 3. Must be able to move 30-40 pounds to stock supplies and move or support patients. 4. Must be able to transport laboratory reports from the laboratory to the Nurses’ Station or other areas of the hospital in an expeditious manner. 5. Must be able to work at countertop and patient bed levels, which may necessitate bending over and stooping for prolonged periods of time. V. VI. 6. Must be able to stand for at least 60% of an 8-hour day. 7. Inventory restocking will require bending, stooping, lifting and reaching. 8. Olfactory system must be intact particularly when processing bacteriological specimens. TRAINING PERIOD AND PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT: A. A probationary period of 90 days (commencing with the date of employment) is required, during which time the employee will satisfactorily demonstrate to the Laboratory Supervisor and Pathologist the ability to perform specific duties required for the Staff Medical Technologist position. B. Performance is measured based on the Staff Medical Technologist’s ability to perform accurately and efficiently the required skills defined in the job description. C. The Staff Medical Technologist will be assessed periodically based upon observations on the job and also by written competency testing. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A. Evaluation will be done at the end of 90 days and annually before November 1 st. B. The Chief Medical Technologist must demonstrate self-control and emotional stability in a variety of situations. C.
