Excite the Learner
Activity 1: (10 min.)
The teacher calls on students to share their “horarios”. Based on their “horarios”, the
teacher creates a sample “horario” on the board.
The class goes over the homework. Various students go to the board and write out
sentences in response to the homework questions. The class collectively corrects any
grammatical errors. The teacher ensures that this is done in a supportive and encouraging
manner. The teacher then transitions to the topic of verbs by asking students, ¿Qué haces
en tus clases?
Actividad 2a: (5 min.)
¿Qué haces en tus clases?
Students complete the key questions (las preguntas claves)
Las pregunta claves:
1. What kinds of things do you regularly do in all of your classes?
2. What do you do regularly in your Spanish class?
Actividad 2b: (5 min.)
The class generates a list on the board of typical class related activities. The teacher
(underlines) draws the class’ attention to the most common school-related activities (i.e.
read, write, speak, listen, study, learn). The teacher then asks students what kind of
words are these; what part of speech. The teacher explains that these are all verbs and
that, like English, the Spanish language also has verbs. The teacher then writes the
Spanish translation for the English verbs on the board in the infinitive form.
Enlighten the Learner
Activity 3: (10 min.) Los verbos: Old School Rap
The teacher explains briefly that today the class will learn about Spanish verbs. Students
will listen to an audio recording regarding Spanish verbs. As they listen, students will
complete a fill in the blank exercise.
After completing the fill in the blank exercise, the class collectively reviews the Old
School Rap lyrics in order to ensure that everyone has the correct fill-ins.
Activity 4 (10 min.) Powerpoint: Conjugation
The teacher presents a Powerpoint presentation to students on verb conjugation.
Engage the Learner

If it’s he or she, they or we, you or I
Each time you conjugate a verb the same rules apply
To conjugate a verb what you need to do
Is ___________________________________________, los pronombres to you
There ain’t no trick, it goes likes this
Check it y’all, ‘cause we’re about to get slick
A pronoun is word ___________________________________________
Instead of Sr. Avilés, you’d say “______” is a clown
It works the same way in Spanish, so you need to know
What the pronouns are, and now here we go
Yo means ______
Tú mean _________
Él, ella, and usted means ______, _______, and _________
We’re almost done because we’re halfway through
So pay close attention and learn a thing or two
Nosotros is the longest and it only means _______
Ellos means ___________, meaning the plural of ______
Ellas means ___________, meaning the plural of ______
Ustedes means you, as in _____________________ can see
Once you list the pronouns
Take a look at the verb

Trabajar means _________________________
So trabajamos, we are
It’s an AR verb because that’s how it ends
Take away the AR and we’re left with the __________________
We’re left with trabaj…,trabaj…, trabaj…
When it’s trabajar, that the ______________________________form
There _________________________________, it’s like the eye of the storm
To give the verb action, what you need to do
Is take the stem of the verb and the pronouns too
To conjugate the verb,
Write out the stem
Put the pronoun before it
And then ____________________________________
With the pronoun “yo”, the verb ends in an “_____”
And now trabaj... becomes yo trabajo
With the pronoun “tú”, the verb ends in “_____”
And now trabaj... becomes tú trabajas
With the pronouns “él”, “ella”, and “usted”
They all _____________________________________________
Did you hear what I said?
And now trabaj... becomes “él”, “ella”, and “usted” trabaja
With the pronoun “nosotros” the verb ends in “___________”
And now trabaj… becomes nostros trabajamos
With the pronouns “ellos”, “ellas”, and “ustedes”
They all _____________________________________________
Are all of you ready?
And now trabaj… becomes “ellos”, “ellas”, and “ustedes” trabajan
And we’re done

That means it conjugates
The same way any time you want to state
Where the action is
If it’s he or she, they or we, you or I
Each time you conjugate a verb the same rules apply
To conjugate a verb what you need to do
Is list the pronouns first, los pronombres to you
There ain’t no trick, it goes likes this
Check it y’all, ‘cause we’re about to get slick
A pronoun is word that takes the place of a noun
Instead of Sr. Avilés, you’d say “he” is a clown
It works the same way in Spanish, so you need to know
What the pronouns are, and now here we go
Yo means I

To give the verb action, what you need to do
Is take the stem of the verb and the pronouns too
To conjugate the verb,
Write out the stem
Put the pronoun before it
And then change the end
With the pronoun “yo”, the verb ends in an “o”
And now trabaj... becomes yo trabajo
With the pronoun “tú”, the verb ends in “as”
And now trabaj... becomes tú trabajas
With the pronouns “él”, “ella”, and “usted”
They all share the same ending
Did you hear what I said?
And now trabaj... becomes “él”, “ella”, and “usted” trabaja
With the pronoun “nosotros” the verb ends in “amos”
And now trabaj… becomes nostros trabajamos
With the pronouns “ellos”, “ellas”, and “ustedes”
