BODY CAVITIES
- Cavities are open spaces enclosed in the
body, that houses (filled up with) organs.
- These cavities are named according to
their positions in the body.
A) DORSAL CAVITIES: There are two
dorsal (back) cavities:
i) Cranial – Houses the brain.
ii) Spinal - Houses the spinal column.
CRANIAL CAVITY
B) VENTRAL CAVITIES: Are found toward
the anterior/ventral (front) surface of the
body.
i) Thoracic (Chest) – This contains two
smaller subdivisions
1. Pleural – houses the lungs
2. Mediastinum – houses the heart and
trachea.

ii) Abdominopelvic – This contains two main
regions as well, these cavities are not
structurally separated.
1. Abdominal cavity - houses the stomach,
gallbladder, liver, pancreas etc.
2. Pelvic cavity – houses the lower colon,
urinary bladder and reproductive organs.
