SENIOR HEAVY EQUIPMENT PARTS TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION
Under direction, to plan, monitor and manage the ordering, purchasing, storing, billing,
issuing and maintenance control of heavy equipment parts, equipment, accessories and
supplies utilized in the service and repair of County and other agencies heavy vehicles;
and to perform other related duties.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES
This is a single-position class located in the Heavy Equipment Shop in the Maintenance
and Operations Department of the Public Works Agency, and reports to a Field
Supervisor I, the Heavy Equipment Shop Supervisor. The incumbent of this class has
lead responsibility over an Auto Parts Technician and other assigned staff. This class is
distinguished from the next lower one of Auto Parts Technician in that the latter class is
not assigned the lead responsibilities of the Senior level. The class of Senior Heavy
Equipment Parts Technician is further distinguished from other storekeeping and supply
clerk classes by the necessity for specialized knowledge of parts, assemblies, and repair
procedures for automotive and construction equipment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.
However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.
Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1.
Plans, directs, trains and coordinates the work of the Auto Supply Technicians and other
assigned staff.
2.
Ensures accuracy, completeness and timeliness related to receiving and processing
orders for established contract accounts; determines and establishes work priorities for
processing orders, scheduling deliveries, meeting deadlines, and maintaining operational
standards; checks and verifies quantity and correctness of items received; personally
orders and purchases by means of emergency confirming requisitions, authorized by the
appropriate Buyer, for critically needed commodities; conducts preliminary cost
projections on major projects.
3.
Ensures invoices are charged to the appropriate accounts; bills for parts purchased for
other departments and jurisdictions; prepares monthly report detailing the purchase of all
stock items and status of the different accounts.

Determines and establishes stock levels for parts, accessories and tools; receives and
monitors the maintenance of stock; coordinates and monitors tracking and control
systems to locate or verify delivery and receipt of storeroom stock using both manual and
automated systems; researches, evaluates and recommends checks and verifies serial
numbers, size, description, production date, type, make and model number of parts and
equipment being requested.

Researches, surveys and performs simple cost analysis relating to parts, services,
accessories, supplies, and equipment; updates and develops new and established
resources to maintain cost effectiveness and to ensure availability of controlled, hard-to-find
or critical parts; maintains continuous contacts with suppliers, vendors, representatives from
private industry and other agencies; relieves auto service employees, mechanics, and
supervisory staff of the need to research catalogs and other sources to select needed parts
and accessories.

Monitors the issuance and distribution of parts and equipment to mechanics, shops and
other County facilities; meets and confers with staff, supervisors, and buyers on measures to
expedite the ordering and issuing process, and on methods to ensure that critical parts are
available.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I
The equivalent of two years in the class of Auto Parts Technician in the Alameda County classified
service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated
Courts.)
Or II
The equivalent of three years’ full-time experience involving the ordering, purchasing, issuing, and
inventory control of heavy equipment parts and/or automotive parts and accessories; one year of
the experience must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.
License:
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the
announcement of an examination.

Heavy equipment parts and automotive parts, equipment, and accessories used in the repair and
maintenance of fleet vehicles and construction equipment.
Vehicle repair and maintenance procedures and terminology.

Stock and inventory control including computerized systems.
Record keeping and filing systems including automated systems.
Local automotive parts and equipment suppliers and vendors.
Basic techniques of research, survey and compilation of data.
