Please prepare your camera-ready abstract according to these instructions. Files can be
converted to universally readable .pdf format with Adobe Acrobat (www.adobe.com) or Ghostscript (www.ghostscript.com, gratis). Abstracts will not be retyped before publication, and
poorly prepared abstracts, or those that fail to follow the instructions, will not be accepted.
Abstracts are limited to a single page! They must fit within an area 6.5 in (16.5 cm) wide x 9
in (22.85 cm) high, as illustrated in this example. Express your preference in the bottom margin.
Throughout the abstract you should use 12-point Times or Times New Roman font, singlespaced. Use all capitals for the title, then skip a line, and put the authors' names on the next line,
followed by their institutional affiliation and address and also the e-mail address of the
corresponding author. Center these headings. Underline the name of the author presenting the
paper or poster. Skip a line and start the body of the abstract. Indent each paragraph and justify
(extend to margins) the text, if possible.
Chemical structures to illustrate and summarize your abstract are encouraged. Use JACS
ChemDraw settings, with bond lengths of 0.5 cm and 10-pt Helvetica atom labels, and center the
figure (or frame it within text at the left or right, if space is a concern).

Any references or footnotes should be indicated within the text by numerical superscripts1
and listed below the text in 12-point type according to ACS journal style.2

Be sure that the format permits symbols and Greek letters, if used, to be printed properly. The
deadline for receipt is 1 May 2002. Authors will be notified by 15 May regarding the acceptance
of their abstract, and whether the presentation is to be oral or poster.
