Press Release SOUTH LONDON ART MAP LAUNCHES The South London Art Map launches on Friday 25 February 2011, putting art south of the river on the map. A must for art lovers, the initiative includes a printed map and interactive website featuring over 90 art galleries, co-ordinated late gallery openings, and art tours of South London. Building on the success of the Deptford Art Map, and the already established ‘Time Out First Thursdays run by the Whitechapel Gallery in East London,’ the South London Art Map is a one-stop resource for the visual arts in South London from Bankside to Greenwich. South London’s arts scene boasts a wealth of creativity from the urban surroundings, creative enclaves of galleries, artists’ studios and popup shops inhabiting what were once industrial buildings and old pubs. The South London Art Map will ensure you never miss an exhibition or event, via a handy printed map available from art venues across London and to download from website (www.southlondonartmap.com) with an online calendar of exhibitions and magazine of highlights. In addition local artists will lead South London Art Tours, to help you experience the best of the South London art scene. The map focuses on three hubs of artistic activity: Deptford - where there are more emerging artists per square mile than in any other part of London, Peckham, which, with the annual Bold Tendencies exhibition in a multi-storey car park is a cutting edge destination for arts, and Bankside (covering a wide area including Bankside, Kennington, Vauxhall and Lambeth), where Tate Modern sits alongside a wealth of artist run and commercial spaces which take you off the beaten track. Julia Alvarez, Director of South London Art Map: “South London is the perfect location for the production of contemporary art. With an intriguing history, vibrancy and the presence of leading art colleges, Goldsmiths College and Camberwell College of Arts, South London is alive with galleries of all sizes and styles – from exhibitions in local authority car parks to old schools and shop spaces. The South London Gallery provides a central point for international contemporary art, whilst smaller galleries such as BEARSPACE and Hannah Barry, are discovering the next generation of contemporary artists.” LAUNCH EVENT The South London Art Map will be launched on 25 February from 18.30 - 20.00 pm at the inaugural late opening of galleries and studios, South London will be open until late with an after party in each of three areas featured on the map. To celebrate the launch of the South London Art Map, Tate Modern has commissioned South London based artist Hew Locke to create an artist product. A limited number of badges designed by the artist will be available at participating venues that evening.
