READING
Przeczytaj tekst o sławnym brytyjskim pisarzu.
‘Charles Dickens’
In the 19th century British people loved novels. There were lots of bookshops and libraries
and people had plenty of time to read. Some novelist wrote their books in episodes. People
bought one episode a month. It was cheaper than a whole book.
Charles Dickens (1812 – 1870) wrote novels in this way. He ended each episode
with something very exciting so people wanted to buy the next episode. He became
the most popular novelist of his time. His books were exciting and funny but they also had
a lot of serious messages. He often wrote about poor people and their difficult lives. When
people read Dickens’s books, they began to understand the problems of the poor.
Charles Dickens knew about the lives of poor people because his own family was poor.
His father was in prison for six months because he didn’t have enough money to pay his bills.
Charles went to work in a shoe polish factory when he was only 12.
‘Oliver Twist’ is one of Dickens’s most famous novels. Oliver Twist lives in orphanage
because he hasn’t got any parents. The orphanage is cold and the children are hungry.
When Oliver asks for more food, he gets into a lot of trouble. He leaves the orphanage
and goes to London. He meets a man called Fagin. Fagin has a group of children who take
money and jewellery from people in the street. Then Fagin keeps the money
and the jewellery. Oliver doesn’t want to work for him but he has to. Oliver has a lot
of adventures but the story has a happy ending.
Dickens also wrote ‘A Christmas Carol ‘. It’s the story of a very mean man called Scrooge.
He pays his workers really badly. Even at Christmas he doesn’t give them extra money.
One of his workers is called Bob Cratchit. His son, Tiny Tim, is ill and can’t walk.
The Cratchit family has a very hard life. Then, on Christmas Eve, three ghosts visit Scrooge.
He is very scared and he changes. He starts to be kind and generous and he gives presents
to everyone. Today we still call a mean person ‘a scrooge’.
