Tauranga: May 14th Nga mihi nui, Ministry: Janet Jennings… Happy New Year to all of you from the Ministry of Education as you begin to provide transformative experiences in the arts for your students of 2009. Tracy Murray I hope the ministry's arts website, Arts Online http://arts.unitec.ac.nz, will continue to meet your needs this year. We are now in the second year of the implementation of The New Zealand Curriculum (2007). Although it can seem to you busy teachers that concepts such as “key competencies” and “values” are not relevant to your teaching programmes, I would encourage you to use the new ministry-produced units and NCEA tasks, or hook into the Interactive Unit Planner http://arts.unitec.ac.nz/iup/. The Engaging with the NZ Curriculum area will be an important bookmark for you http://arts.unitec.ac.nz/engageinarts/ - and the new curriculum units will help you to engage with the curriculum. Each discipline has support materials and units of work. These are all available on Arts Online in the Engaging with the NZ Curriculum area/Resources http://arts.unitec.ac.nz/resources/. You can use them either as a source of ideas or new ways of thinking, a model for producing your own tasks, or simply download the resources for immediate use and adaptation. Also, note that the Teacher Resource Exchange holds a vast range of current resources for the new curriculum and Tracy Murray, Visual Arts Adviser (Secondary) Tauranga School Support Services, Ph: 07 577 5314 Fax: 07 577 5315 142 Durham Street, Private Bag 12027, Tauranga Mob: 027 278 0032 email: t.murray@waikato.ac.nz
