VI. Assignments:
A. Position paper assignments (20 Points per component for a total of 80 Points):
This is the large writing assignment for this course. A supplemental sheet details this assignment.
In summary, you will select a topic from the list of topics I generate, and will prepare a 9-12 page
POSITION PAPER on the topic. You will write each section of the paper (a total of 3 parts) and
turn it in on the assigned date during the semester. By midterm, you will combine all three
assignments into one composite paper and turn that in for a final grade.
B. Case Studies/Article Reviews (10 points each for a total of 100 Points):
There are case studies at the end of each chapter of your textbook. A total of eight specific case
studies are due throughout the semester (they are listed on the class website). The case study
assignment consists of your written response to a brief scenario and the questions that accompany it.
A form has been provided on the class website for your use. A total of two article reviews are due
during this class. A form has also been provided on the class website for your use. More specific
information will be given about these assignments in class.
C. Interview Assignment (50 Points):
You will be expected to interview a health care professional of your choice and present what you
learned from them in a PowerPoint Presentation to the class at the end of the semester. This project
will serve as your final exam. Sample interview questions and PowerPoint Presentations will be on
the class website. Attendance during the presentations is mandatory. Unexcused absences will
result in 10 points being deducted from your interview assignment score for each class period missed
during the scheduled presentations. Students who miss their scheduled presentation time without
making prior arrangements with me will only be allowed to make up their presentation if time allows
and will receive a 15 POINT deduction for the assignment.
D. In-Basket Exercise (50 Points):
This in-class activity involves critical review, decision-making, and delegation skills. Each group
will have two class periods to complete this activity to the best of their ability. Attendance at both
sessions in required for a student to get full points on this project.
E. Comprehensive Take-Home Exam (150 Points):
This exam will be on the class website throughout the semester. It is highly recommended that
students work on this exam throughout the semester as we cover each chapter. The due date will be
posted on the class website and no late exams will be accepted
F. Attendance (120 Points): You are expected to attend class. You will receive 5
attendance/participation points for each class you attend. Each student is granted 3 instructorexcused absences for the semester. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure you have signed the
daily attendance sheet, especially if you have come in late. In addition, official university
documentation is required for all absences due to sports, university activities or other special
circumstances.
G. Teamwork Points (50 Points):
Students will be able to earn points and to lose points through the teamwork activities throughout the
semester. More information will be presented about these opportunities in class.
VII.
Tardiness: Habitual tardiness is not a good thing. It is disruptive to class and unfair to the other
students. If you will always be late for a good reason, let me know. Otherwise I expect you to
assimilate quietly into the class once you arrive and immediately join in whatever activity we are
completing. If something unexpected comes up, I much prefer you come in quietly and join our
class for part of the class period than for you to miss our class entirely.
Cell phones, pagers, etc.: While these devices may be necessary, they are often disruptive in the
classroom. If you must have such a device turned on for emergency purposes, the ringer must be
turned off. If your use of such devices becomes disruptive, you will be asked to turn it off and leave
it turned off in class for the remainder of the semester.
