Review Sheet for Chapter 1 and 2 Test
1.
Be able to list and explain the characteristics of living things
- what is a cell?
- The basic unit of structure and function
- what is homeostasis and give an example
- Maintaining an internal balance (ex: sweating to cool down)
- All living things grow and develop. Give an example.
- A caterpillar growing and developing into a butterfly
- What is an adaptation?
- a trait that helps an organism survive in its environment
2
Know the levels of organization from cell to biosphere.
- Put the terms in order from smallest to largest
Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, Organism, Population,
Community , Ecosystem, Biosphere
- The stomach is an example of a(an) _______Organ________________
- The digestive system is an example of a(n) ___Organ
System______
- What is the difference between a population and a community?
A community and an ecosystem?
- a population is a group of the same species. A community is
different species living in an area and an ecosystem includes
the nonliving environment
3.
Define Domain and Species.
- Domain is the broadest way to classify, species is the most
specific
- What are the main characteristics of the 3 Domains: Bacteria,
Archaea, and Eukarya
o Bacteria and Archaea = prokaryotic
o Eukarya= eukaryotic
4.
Describe the difference between Discovery Science and
Hypothesis-Based Science
- Discovery based is using observations and making
inferences, hypothesis based is testing a hypothesis with
scientific method
- what is the difference between an observation and an inference?
- an observation is gathering information using senses while
inferences are guesses based on observations
- what is a generalization?
- conclusions based on multiple observations
- be comfortable with the scientific method and writing a
hypothesis
(Ask a question, gather information, write a hypothesis, test
hypothesis, analyze and conclude)
- know the characteristics of a controlled, valid experiment
- Multiple trials, large sample size, test only 1 variable, control for
all factors except 1, be able to repeat procedure
- In a controlled experiment how many variables are tested?
Why? – only 1, to be sure that your results are due to just that
variable
- Define the following:
o Control:
- what is kept the same and used as a basis for comparison
o Independent Variable:
- what is changed in the experiment
o Dependent Variable:
- The data collected (depends on the independent variable)
- What is the difference between a theory and a law?
- Theory is a well tested explanation that is well supported, but a
law is a statement of fact, can’t be disproven
5. Be sure you are able to graph a data table. Know where to put the
variables and how to create an interval.
6. For the following problem/question. Write a hypothesis, indicate the
control, independent and dependent variables. What types of factors
would you control for? How would you ensure that this experiment is
valid?
Can Extra Strength Tylenol get rid of a headache?
Hypothesis: If you take EST, then your headache will go away
Control : placebo (sugar pill)
Independent variable: EST
Dependent variable: headache
Control for: age of people, size of people,
Valid Experiment: large sample size, repeat many times getting same
results
