Biology Q1 Making of Herbarium: Children, you have been recently studying the morphology and anatomy of the flowering plants. A lot of plants were mentioned and observed by you and also the specimens (preserved as well as live) which were brought to the class for studying, to build an understanding of the arrangement of various parts of the plant organs. You can now : Prepare a herbarium of same , by collecting specimens and categorizing them according to the way we studied them and also classified them. A Herbarium is a store house of collected plant specimens which are dried, pressed and preserved on sheets. Further these sheets are arranged according to a universally accepted system of classification. These specimens along with their descriptions on herbarium sheets become a repository for future use. The herbarium sheets also carry a label providing information about the date and place of collection, names(English, local and Botanical names), family, collectors name etc. This exercise serves as a quick referral system in taxonomic studies. This can be presented on the herbarium sheets (brought from the market and if not available buy chart papers. Cut it into four parts and paste the dried plant on it with the details of the plant to be written on the right hand side of the sheet. Do not forget to mention the name of the plant as well as the description and location on the bottom right hand side of the sheet. Immense value would be added to your collection, if you come across plants (for which we could not procure specimens) on your trip to various destinations during the vacations.
