Your Child’s Safety Town Message To You
(Curriculum Guide)
Dear Family,
Here is what SAFETY TOWN will teach me:
BUS SAFETY
1. Proper bus boarding – wait in line, one at a time, hold onto the railing, no
pushing, and never crawl under the bus for any reason.
2. Keep my hands to myself, and NEVER put my hands or head out the window
because a truck or tree could be very close.
3. Sit back in my seat so if the bus driver stops quickly, I won’t bump my face. I
can put my hands up to protect myself.
4. Keep my feet and belongings in my seat and not in the aisle so no one trips,
falls, or gets hurt.
5. I can go to a bus stop and wait for a bus to come, if I am lost, hurt or need
help. Bus drivers are my friends.
CROSSING THE STREET
1. First I stop my feet at the curb, EVERYTIME; then I look left, right, and over
my shoulder for turning cars, and listen for sirens.
2. In the crosswalk, I stay between the 2 white lines, and to the right side so I
don’t bump into people.
3. When there is a traffic light, I WAIT for the light to turn GREEN, (green
means go), then I look left, right, and over my shoulder, just to make sure no
car is coming. Sometimes drivers forget and I must learn to watch out for
myself.
BICYCLES/SKOOTERS/SKATES
1. I will learn how to use and take care of my equipment properly.
2. I will always wear a helmet and other safety equipment when I am
riding on wheels.
3. I will follow the pedestrian rules, just like when I am walking.
4. I will ask an adult to be with me when I am using my wheels.
RIDING IN A CAR
1. I will always stay seated and wear a seat belt when I am in the car.
2. I will not distract the driver with loud noises or movements.
PARKED CARS / DRIVEWAYS – “SEE AND BE SEEN”
1. I am much smaller than a car. If I go between parked cars, drivers can’t see
me. Drivers don’t expect me to be playing between parked cars, so I NEVER
play between parked cars.
2. I must always stop to see if cars are backing out of a driveway because they
can’t see me, especially if there are bushes or big buildings nearby.
SAFETY SIGNS
1. I know all about the many signs including STOP, traffic lights, crosswalks,
yield, school zones, railroad crossings, etc. Please help me review them.
CROSSING GUARDS
1. They help me cross the street and I always obey and listen to them.
2. They wear special badges and a vest so I know who they are.
STREETS / DRIVERS
1. Streets are for cars, so I never play in the street. I play in my yard, or in my
friend’s yard, or at a playground.
2. All drivers have to stop at the stop signs, and at a red light, just like Mom and
Dad. At Safety Town, I stop at stop signs in the pedal cars.
STRANGERS
1. I NEVER go with anyone I don’t know. Even if they want to give me candy,
toys or money, or want me to help them look for a lost puppy. They might
hurt me.
2. I never go anywhere alone. I stay with my friends, under the supervision of a
grown up.
3. Only my Mom, Dad, or my doctor should touch me in the areas that are
covered by my bathing suit. If anyone touches me in a way that makes me feel
uncomfortable, I will tell a grown up that I trust.
PLAYGROUND
1. I NEVER get too close to the front or back of a swing when someone is
swinging, because I could get hurt. I never throw or push the swings around
when they are empty either.
2. I NEVER throw sand or wood chips because that could hurt if it got in my
eyes, or someone else’s.
3. On the slide, I take turns ONE AT A TIME, and I always go UP THE LADDER
and DOWN THE SLIDE sitting on my bottom. This way, no one gets hurt.
4. I learn how to control my hands and feet on the Big Toy, and follow the rules
for the other equipment.
HOME SAFETY
1. I will learn our telephone number and address.
2. After playing with my toys, I put them away so no one falls over them.
3. Soaps, bleaches, paints, and all the other cleaners are for grown ups to use,
and I NEVER touch or play with them because they are not toys and could
hurt me very badly.
4. Tools and lawn mowers are very dangerous and could hurt me, so I won’t
touch them or go near them. I only play with my own toys.
5. Plastic bags and spray cans are not toys either. They can hurt me so I don’t
touch them.
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
1. Please help me create a family safety plan and survival kit. Post emergency
numbers near the telephone.
2. In an earthquake I will DROP, COVER AND HOLD. I will find a safe exit and
follow our safety plan with your help.
MEDICINE SAFETY
1. I NEVER take pills or any medicine, except when my parents or the doctor
give them to me. I could take too many and get very sick.
2. I NEVER play with pills. If I ever find any bottles with pills or medicine, I give
them to a grown up.
FIRE SAFETY
1. I NEVER play with matches, lighters, or the stove/oven because I could get
burned. If I ever find any matches or a lighter, I will go and tell Mom or Dad,
but never touch them myself.
2. If there is a fire in my house, I will walk, not run, quickly to get out. I will
NEVER hide from a fire. If there is a lot of smoke, I will crawl out real low, so
I can breathe.
3. I will practice an emergency plan with you, Mom and Dad, so I know where
we can all meet if there is a fire and we get separated.
4. I will remind you to check the batteries in our smoke detector every time we
change the clocks for Daylight Savings Time.
5. If my clothes catch on fire, I will remember to STOP, DROP, and ROLL!
FIREFIGHTERS / POLICE OFFICERS
1. They are my friends. They want to help people. They can protect me from
danger.
ANIMAL SAFETY
1. I NEVER approach a strange animal that is not on a leash. If I see an animal
on a leash, I can ask the owner if it is ok to pet their animal.
2. Before I pet a strange animal, I always let it smell my closed fist first.
3. I always use gentle touches with animals.
4. I will NEVER try to break up fights between animals, or pet any animal who
acts scared. Animals can’t talk so they sometimes bite to say, “You’re scaring
me!”
OUTDOOR SAFETY
1. When I am hiking or camping, I will NEVER wander away by myself.
2. I will wear warm, brightly colored clothing, so if I do get lost, you can spot me
easily. (A plastic poncho in my pocket would protect me from bad weather).
3. Always have a whistle with me, so I can blow it if I get lost. I can blow a
whistle louder than I can call for help, and I won’t get as tired as quickly.
WATER SAFETY
1. I will NEVER swim alone or in bad weather. I will stay in the shallow end until
I learn to swim, but once I know how, I will only dive into the deeper end of
the pool.
2. I will always swim with a grown up, and be near the lifeguard station.
3. I will never run around the pool, or bring glass containers near a pool.
4. I will keep electrical appliances away from the water.
5. If I need help in the water, I will raise my arms over my head and wave them
back and forth. I will not pretend to need help.
6. If someone needs help in the water, I will throw a safety ring in to help and
NOT jump in myself.
HELPERS
1. I will call 9-1-1 if there is a real emergency, and I am always going to be
helpful to bus drivers, firemen, policemen.
2. I will help by making safe choices.
At Safety Town, I was reminded that I am still very small, and I forget things.
Please keep this paper and remind me to be safe and remember my safety rules. Please
take the time to help me, and teach me about new things so I’ll know what to do! Thank
you for always looking out for me.
Love,
Your Precious Child
