October 2014 Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers: The fall season is upon us… It is hard to believe that we are starting our 2nd month of school. At Albion Heights this year, we have seen some changes. We welcome 2 new teachers to our staff. Mr.Codjoe grade 5 and Mr. Constantinescu our new French teacher. Our first Albion Heights Parent Council Meeting was held last week. It was very well attended. Thank you to those parents that came. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday November 18 from 6:30-7:30. Congratulations to Ms. Walsh and Ms. Agathos who are our continuing co-chairs for the 2014-2015 school year. We are continuing with our fundraising initiative selling Lamontagne Chocolates, this is a voluntary activity. The fundraiser will run until Oct 17. A reminder that students are only to sell to friends and family. Profit from this event will go towards technology buying corded and cordless microphones, Apple TV devices, stereo speakers and an Apple compatible printer. A reminder that supervision does not begin in the school yard until 8:15. Some students have been dropped off earlier and there is no one out to supervise. At the end of the day, there is supervision until 3:10. Please pick up your child(ren) on time. The creative play scape is also closed after school until 3:10. After 3:10 there is no supervision on the play scape. Sandra Buie Principal BUSING The busing situation has greatly improved since the beginning of September. We now have 2 large buses in the am and 2 large buses in the pm. A reminder that riding the school bus is a privilege and that proper behavior is expected on the bus. Continued unacceptable behavior on the bus could lead to students being taken off the bus. Please take a minute and speak to your children about appropriate bus behavior. For those that drive through the bus loop, please make sure your child is ready to leave the car quickly. The lineup of cars in the loop is always increasing. The quicker you are, the more cars get to go through the loop. Please note that there is NO parking your car in the loop. Please do not wait for your child in the loop. It needs to be kept clear for the buses. If you call our safe arrival, please indicate whether your child is a bus student or not. CURRICULUM NIGHT Please join us on Thursday October 16th for our Curriculum Night. You will have the opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and meet their teacher. We will be selling our fundraising chocolates and Albion Heights t-shirts/long sleeve shirts that evening. TERRY FOX A long standing tradition at Albion Heights is our participation in the Terry Fox walk. Staff and students will be participating in an assembly on Oct 10 at 8:45 followed by our own Terry Fox walk. We are encouraging students to contribute a toonie that will be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation. All are welcome. EQAO RESULTS Every year in May/June students in grades 3 and 6 participate in the reading, writing and math assessments. If your child participated in this assessment last year, you have already received the individual student results. These results help us to identify areas of student strength, target areas requiring support and the plan for improvement. Remembering that EQAO data are just one part of the educational picture along with other forms of assessment. Please see attached the EQAO results for Albion Heights. Four out of six subject areas increased over last year. MEDICATION If your child has a life-threatening allergy, you were given a white medical information form that is to go to your doctor. Please do this ASAP and return to the school. We want to make sure that all teachers, supply teachers and the office staff are aware of this and proceed accordingly. ALBION HEIGHTS T-SHIRTS/LONG SLEEVE SHIRTS Watch for the letter about buying Albion Heights t-shirts and long sleeve shirts at Curriculum Night. Please note that in “the late primary and junior grades, homework may begin to take the form of independent work” WE ARE WRITERS When you are in the school, I invite you to have a look at the class unedited writing binders located in front of the office. At Albion Heights our students are proud of the writing they are doing and we want to show it off!!
