Dear Parents and Guardians, Oct 1, 2014 Welcome to the 2014-2015 School year. Fall is here, the leaves are falling and starting to change however, we are experiencing some warm days. It was very exciting to have the students back and to hear their stories. We are settling into our routines and the secretaries, teachers, custodians and education assistants have all been working hard to prepare for the year. We have several new staff members this year, including Madame Michaud our viceprincipal. I am very happy to be back for a second year and look forward to working with students, staff and parents to enhance the learning at Roosevelt. After a year of listening, watching, a steep learning curve and many conversations, we are re-organizing some of our routines and protocols to improve student achievement. Please support us by using The Daily Five at home. The Daily Five Read to Yourself – the best way to become a better reader is to practice each day, with books you choose, on your just-right reading level. It soon becomes a habit. Read to Someone – reading to someone allows for more time to practice strategies, helping you work on fluency and expression, check for understanding, hear your own voice, and share in the learning community. Work on Writing –just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is to practice writing each day. Listen to Reading – we hear examples of good literature and fluent reading. We learn more words, thus expanding our vocabulary and becoming better readers. Spelling/Word Work – correct spelling allows for more fluent writing, thus speeding up the ability to write and get thinking down on paper. This is an essential foundation for writers. New Staff – we have a number of new staff this year and we are looking forward to working together to ensure the learning for each child is maximized. Ms. M. Cooper, Ms. M. Sigismund, Mrs. K. Nielsen, Ms. S. Kenmuir and Aurlie Lagueux-Beloin. Parking Lot – The parking lot is a very busy place in the morning and after school. Please slow down when dropping off and picking up your sons and daughters. New Address/Phone Numbers – please advise the school of any new contact information that may have changed over the summer. School Supplies- students who ordered their supplies in June received their supply packs. Please ensure that all students have their supplies at school by Friday October 3, 2014. Lunch Program - we are reminding parents to send back the monthly lunch forms signed with contributions enclosed as soon as possible after you receive them. This way we can ensure that your child has a lunch each day. Head Checks – please remember to do regular head checks with your child(ren) for nits or lice. If you need assistance with this, please do not hesitate to call us or the Health Unit at 250-622 6380. We will be doing our first monthly head check soon and families will be notified (phone/letter) if we have any concerns. Popcorn Day – our regular popcorn sales will be starting Friday Oct, 3 2014. Popcorn is $1:00 / bag Attendance - Please call the school if your child/children are going to be absent or late. After School Messages – we will pass on emergency messages only to students (ie change in Dr. or dentist appointment). Please leave a message on the answering machine if we do not pick up as the office is a very busy place. Please make all other arrangements with your child before dropping them at school. Terry Fox Run - we had our annual Terry Fox Run on Thursday and then all students were treated to a popsicle. If you would like to make a donation to the Terry Fox Foundation, please bring it to the office or give to the classroom teacher.
