Lesson Plan 2 Course Name: Health Lesson Topic: Abstinence is a safe and health decision Grade Level: 7 Lesson Objectives: After this lesson students be able to define decision making, recall and apply the 5 step Decision Making Model to abstinence, define resistance skills, and identify/apply at least 3 resistance skills for abstinence. Link to Standard: A student shall demonstrate an understanding of decision-making processes and community health practices that promote healthful sexual behaviors, to reduce and prevent poor decisions regarding sexual activity. Prior Knowledge: General understanding of abstinence, abstinence from sexual activity and influences on abstinence. Skills that are need to complete the lesson decision making, critical thinking, and basic communication skills. Review/Bridging Statement/Anticipatory Set: Last time we learned about abstinence and relationships and mainly dealing with the aspects of dating. Now that we have learned a little about abstinence and dating we are going to learn how to remain abstinent through decision making and resistance skills. Activity Title: Critical thinking and discussion Infusion: no Inclusion: yes Objective for Activity: After this lesson the students will be able to explain what healthy decision making is, how to apply the decision making model, and identify at least 3 resistance skills Previous knowledge: What sexual abstinence is, and the risk factors of not being sexual abstinent. Materials Needed: over heads, paper, and pencil Time Allowed: 6-8 mins Directions 1. Read the overhead carefully 2. Apply the 5 step decision making model to the scenario above. 3. Identify 3 resistance skills that could be used in the scenario. 4. This will be done individually 5. Put your pencils down when you are finished. 6. Everyone will share their answers with the class. Evaluation: The teacher will evaluate by observation of participation and effort. Resource: None Scenario Directions: Read the following scenario and then individually come up with a solution described at the end of the scenario. Alex and Brenda who are dating are at a birthday party. There is alcohol at the party and Alex has been indulging in it. They start kissing a little and end up in a room all alone. Alex wants to engage in sexual activity but Brenda is not quite ready for this kind of a commitment. Brenda has been dating Alex for 2 years and doesn’t want to leave and upset Alex. (What should Brenda do? Apply the 5 step decision making model for Brenda and then come up with a solution of what she should do. Also identify 3 resistance skills Brenda could use and how she should use them. Lesson 7 VIII. How can I abstain? A. Decision making – The ability to make your own choices (Meeks, Heit, & Page, 2003, G-10) 1. Decision Making Model is an instructional strategy in which students are given a situation for which a choice must be made and asked to apply a series of steps to determine which choice leads to responsible actions (Meeks, Heit, & Page, 2003, 134). 2. How to apply the model (Marzan, 1992, in HES 355 Course Packet). a. Identify decisions to be made and state as a question b. Identify and describe options and choices c. Identify criteria for making decisions d. Weigh each option and choice against criteria e. Make decision and explain reasoning 3. How can decision making encourage abstinence (Merki, & Merki, 2004, 20)? a. Never have to worry about unplanned pregnancy b. Will not be faced with the difficult decisions associated with unplanned pregnancy such as being a single parent. c. Will not have to take on the many responsibilities of caring for a child. d. Don’t have to worry about sexually transmitted infections e. Are free of the emotional problems that usually accompany sexual activity such as guilt, regret, and rejection B. How to apply resistance skills 1. Resistance skills help a person say no to an action or leave a situation (Meeks, Heit, & Page, 2003, G-29) 2. How to use these skills (Meeks, Heit, & Page, 2003, 132) a. Say no with self-confidence b. Give reasons for saying no c. Repeat your responses several times d. Use nonverbal behavior to match verbal behavior e. Avoid situations in which there will be pressure to make wrong decisions. f. Resist pressure to engage in illegal behavior g. Influence others to make responsible decisions h. Be honest i. Match your actions with your words j. Think ahead k. Avoid being with a person that chooses harmful actions. 3. How to confront Peer Pressure a. Stand up for yourself or others b. Be assertive not aggressive c. Be persistent when saying no 4. Why is it important to counter peer pressure? a. Makes you realize who your real friends are, true friends don’t negatively pressure each other. b. Countering negative peer pressure can save you from a poor decision that you will regret in the future. c. Countering peer pressure helps you distinguish between positive and negative influences in your life.
