Challenges Presented By Adolescent
Sexual Behavior
• Teen Births.
The U.S. leads the western word in births to
teens. New Mexico consistently has one of the
highest rates of teen births in the country.
Challenges Presented by Adolescent
Sexual Behavior
• Teen Births. The health, social, and economic
consequences of this too early childbearing
are devastating.
Challenges Presented By Adolescent
Sexual Behavior
• HIV/AIDS & Other Sexually Transmitted
Disease.
High rates of sexually transmitted disease,
particularly among young people. These are
much more than an inconvenience. They
represent a serious public health problem.
Challenges Presented By Adolescent
Sexual Behavior
• Lack of Future Focus
Young people who:
(1) postpone sexual involvement,
(2) set positive achievable goals for their lives, and
(3) work toward those goals,
are more likely to be successful than those who
become involved in sexual relationships early in life
and focus on now rather than a better future.
Magic Bullets
• Comprehensive sexuality education and
abstinence education programs both attempt
to help young people deal with issues related
to adolescent sexual behavior. Neither
approach, however, offers a magic bullet.
Sex Can Wait
• The Sex Can Wait curriculum series is a lifeskills program that helps young people
postpone sexual involvement and make a
successful transition from adolescence to
adulthood.

Attempts to gain a high level of parent participation
in school-based programming have not achieved a
high level of success. When parents do become
involved, they are rarely the parents of children who
are at highest risk.
