Standard Operating Procedures
Common Area Cleaning
1. Purpose: To establish policy and procedures to ensure that all common areas are
properly maintained.
2. Scope: This operating procedure applies to housekeeping in common areas i.e.
hallways, laundry rooms, vending areas, stairwells, public restrooms and lobby
reflecting an orderly and clean environment.
3. Authority Responsibility: Housekeeping staff, lead and supervisory personnel.
4. Procedures:
a. Common areas include all front of the house public areas such as lobbies, public
restrooms, common kitchens, stairwells, guest hallways, fitness areas, vending areas
and laundry rooms.
b. Scheduling of common area cleaning shall reflect the 24 hour nature of lodging
operations ensuring common guest areas are fresh for use during all hours of typical
demand.
c. Local deep cleaning plans shall include schedules for common areas.
d. Local addendum’s shall detail frequency of common area cleaning at times
designed for least guest interruption as well as detailed tasks required to complete the
cleaning task.
e. The following guidance is provided as a minimum to be annotated for local use:
1) Common area cleaning items shall include a review for and reporting of
ongoing maintenance requirements such as replacement light bulbs, broken door stops
ripped or torn upholstery, etc.
2) Vacuum lobby and common area carpets twice daily; guest room hallways
daily.
3) Ensure common areas are kept in a neat, orderly fashion with furnishings
arranged properly and ancillary services (such as coffee or continental breakfast
service) replenished or recovered (cleaned and put away) as appropriate.
4) All trash receptacles (interior and exterior) must be cleaned and emptied twice
daily. Receptacles will not be allowed to go beyond two-thirds full.
5) All exterior public ashtrays/receptacles must be cleaned twice daily.
6) Spills are cleaned up immediately.
7) All public bathrooms should be cleaned, mopped, sanitized and resupplied
twice daily.
8) Vacuum/mop area under and wipe down vending machines daily.
9) Dust and wipe down all railings and ledges daily.
10) All glass areas must be wiped and free of smudges and streaks.
11) Laundry rooms are cleaned twice daily, washers are kept free of
accumulation of soap scum and dryers are kept free of accumulation of lint.
12) Buffing the floor weekly and wax/stripping was twice p. month.
13) Dust and clean all light fixtures weekly.
14) All bathroom and lobby tile areas will be wiped down weekly.
15) Polish all brass/silver in common areas to include bell carts monthly/
