VOL: 4 WEEK 42 Oct 20 2011
YOUR SIGNATURE’S NEEDED At last night’s meeting held in Dunmanway it was fully agreed by all present to start a signature campaign to retain their Garda Stations in each area in West Cork. Members of the Goleen Community Alert and Community Council will be calling to your house in the next few days seeking your signature for the support of the retention of the local Garda station. The choice is simple to all; either we fight and do all we can to win a battle to keep our Garda station open or we face being looked after by the travelling squad from
Bantry or Bandon. If this is to happen it will spell disaster in Rural Ireland as the local guard knows and works with the local community and knows who should be here and knows who should not; this is what every community deserves. It is now emerging that these closures are not an IMF idea, but one that is coming from within our country. The savings are so small that the cost of running one presidential campaign would probably keep every Garda station open in Rural Ireland for a few years. Ballydehob and Goleen Garda stations are earmarked for closure, but don’t any other Garda area think they are exempt from this closure. No matter how new your garda station is if the first round of closures go through, the next round will see more going. So we must all unite to fight this crazy decision that is a true attack on all in Rural Ireland. On Monday night members of the community groups from the Mizen will travel to Kilbrittain in support of their public meeting at 9pm to oppose these closures and to unite behind our fellow communities. A public meeting will then take place on next
Friday 25th at 8.30pm in, most likely, the Parkway Hotel. (the venue yet to be confirmed). All of you, the public, will be invited to this meeting and your support would be greatly appreciated

Table Tennis—Three Goleen players represented West Cork at the Ulster Junior Open in Newtownabbey over the weekend. This was the 2nd in a series of 5 events on the National circuit. The event attracts only the very best players in Ireland and all three of our Goleen players made a good account of themselves. Both Mair Kelly and Sam Coughlan found themselves with very tough opening round draws, Sam faced the No.1 and No.3
U12 Irish players in the first round of the U14s and caused one or two surprises but was unable to take the 3 sets required. Mair faced the No.1
U14 and No.1 U12 in her first round of the U14s and was not able to cause the major upset required. However she showed tremendous composure
to win every other match that day and take the U14 Girls Plate Title and was presented with her first major Irish National Medal. In their main event the two Goleen lads, Sam Coughlan and James Kelly both reach the second round with Sam recording a good win against Castlerahan’s William
Love and performing well against Irish No.2 Evan McGovern who went on to win his first title later in the day. James dominated his first round group and took out fellow Munster players Tom Walsh and Zico McSweeney in the second round. Sam was unable to qualify from his next group but finished in 13th place, a 5 place improvement on his first Irish Ranking. James Kelly faced his old rival Eddie Ditchburn in the ¼ finals and Eddie showed some startling form to beat James for the first time in over a year. James went on to finish 7th overall but manages to maintain his No.3 seeding for the next event. All in all a successful trip, the players will now be concentrating on the provincial rankings with all the players hoping to make the top 8 places and be in with a chance of making the Munster Team. MIZEN ROVERS The footballing history between Goleen and St Colum’s teams over the years has been long and varied with the Kealkill based club coming out on top on the majority of occasions with a few notable exceptions. The gap has certainly been closing and 2011 looked like the year when Mizen had the better balanced team in the u16 grade and feared nobody on the way to the championship final .St Colum’s had reached the final from their side of the draw after a replay with their neighbours Ballingeary. When Mizen and Colums met in the league at Goleen earlier in the season it took a last minute free to give Mizen the victory in that contest. So the scene was set for an enthralling final at the Ballydehob venue on a damp Tues. evening with a large crowd of vocal supporters following both teams. The Goleen contingent had more reason to shout during the early stages with Mizen penning the opposition back in their own half. They were exerting massive pressure on the backs which yielded a few points but not nearly enough in the circumstances. Colum’s picked away a few points of their own but still trailed 5pts to 3 at the break. Mizen again started the second half in powerful fashion and added an early point to extend their lead but Colums then got that all important goal to draw level.
Mizen were then dealt a fatal blow when forced to play a man down for the last 20 minutes of the game but once more raised their game and again led by two with nine mins remaining. Colums never relented and with a couple from play and a couple of handy frees wore Mizen down to win it by the bare minimum in the end on a score line 1-7 to 0-9.This was a tough physical contest with some strange decisions from the Gabriels officials that at times had players and mentors on all sides frustrated and confused. Well done to this great bunch of lads who gave it their all to the final whistle in difficult conditions .

Mizen AFC- travelled to Darragh Pitch last Sunday to take on Clonakilty Town. Clon started the scoring early in the game, and were two goals up in the first fifteen minutes but Mizen came back strong with some great team-work. Captain for the match, Daniel O'Callaghan scored from a Penalty and Patrick Scully headed in another goal to even the score before half-time. Goalie, Ross O'Connell was taken off in the second half after being injured by a sliding tackle in the first half and Ronan Kennedy took over in Goal. The score remained 2 - 2 after the second-half. Well done to the
Mizen team on a lively game of soccer with some great tactics that paid off, under the guidance of coach, Rob Greenaway. Some of our players are nursing injuries and we wish them a speedy recovery! Physio, Deirdre O'Leary is a welcome addition to the Club. Next fixture is away to
