GOLEEN & DISTRICT COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER SERVING THE MIZEN PENINSULA VOL: 4 WEEK 39 Sept 29 2011 Published every Thursday CONTINUED WASTE Well, for some, the circus has just begun as the seven candidates for the office of President of Ireland are now known. But again I ask at what cost has this been to the tax payer and again maybe I'm on my own here, but do we need a President? Such extravagance from what we are led to believe is a country that is broke. Remember we are just a small island. There is no doubt this week saw what any level minded person could only call a farce as couriers drove frantically around the country over the weekend to drop off papers to Councillors. Then we saw Councillors being called back to Council Chambers specially on Tuesday to vote yes or no for a presidential hopeful. What amazes me is that no one’s asking anyone what's all this going to cost? Whether we like it or not this money will have to be found from somewhere in the months ahead from the already over squeezed tax payer. But it’s no point in talking as no one’s listening at the top. What we will all have to accept is that already some are making a fortune out of what most people see as just one big joke. POSTER FREE ZONE At the Goleen and District Community Council AGM a request from the floor that we make the Goleen parish a poster free zone at all elections was discussed. Unfortunately the request got put in the back burner, but we would like to support this excellent idea and tell all candidates that Goleen Parish wants to be a poster free zone. Please respect the wishes of the people, candidates. We know well who ye are, so we don't want any of your posters. CULTURE NIGHT 2011 GREAT SUCCESS There were many events held all over the Cork County to mark Culture Night, but it would have been difficult for any of them, no matter how much publicity they got, to match the night organised by Goleen & District Community Council, who organised what many described as a night to remember. With DVDS playing all night going back to life here in 1959. This had the audience enthralled, but this was just a small portion of the night’s events with music, provided voluntarily by Noel Shannon and Timmy O Sullivan, that had the people dancing and also the Card playing skills were displayed. Cards have played such a big part in all communities for decades and thanks to the card players, who broke with their weekly tradition to show all their skill. Table Tennis was ongoing on the night as was a Story Telling session, when many topics were discussed. One of these being when Donal O'Sullivan, Dunmanus, spoke in some detail of the Junior B 1959 winning team. With many of the team players in attendance on the night it brought back many memories for them. Books written in the area over the past thirty years were discussed and with some of the authors in the audience, it gave them an opportunity to talk about their book s. ‘Northside of the Mizen’ author, Pat McCarthy, Gurthduv, gave a detailed run down on his book as did Denis Downey, Carrigmanus, on the book, ‘Next Parish America’. Other books discussed were ‘My Parish’ by the late Nan Jermyn, Toormore, ‘When the Stones Cry Out’ by Hannah O Driscoll, the Prairie, ‘A Time to Laugh, a Time to Cry’ by Mike Twohig, Ardravinna, ‘Marconi’ by Michael Sexton and the Mizen Journal by the Mizen Archaeological and Historical Society. This discussion went on for a lengthy time, but not a one in the packed audience wanted to leave. But the biggest success of the night went to the Archive section, when many brought a huge amount of photos of happenings in the peninsula up to one hundred years ago. This is hugely valuable to the community and Goleen & District Community Council would like to thank all those, who took time to get these photos and bring them and allow us to copy them and have for many years to come. But this was not all that went on, the Community Council launched their logo on the night and also handed over the proceeds of the recent Schull Hospital fundraisers, that took place in Goleen. All in all this was a night for all to remember WEST CORK! WAKE UP AND COME OUT IN BIG NUMBERS AS AMBULANCE CUTS COULD SPELL DISASTER FOR RURAL PENINSULAS It's hard to believe that anyone in their right mind would consider cutting back our Ambulance Services, but this seems to be what's happening. Cork is the biggest county in Ireland and proper ambulance cover in the area is crucial. On Tomorrow Friday Oct 30th we will hear first hand as to what is happening with the Ambulance service in West Cork. This public meeting will held in the West Cork Hotel, Skibbereen at 8pm and all are strongly advised to attend. Let those, who are meant to be representing us, know that this can’t and won’t happen. It will lead to a massive loss of lives. COMPUTER COURSES Following on the success of the computer classes organised by Goleen & District Community Council for beginners early this year, we are happy to announce that another series of courses for beginners will be starting soon. Mizen AFC travelled to Carrigroe pitch last Sunday to take on Ardfield. Ten minutes from starting time Liam O'Connell scored the first goal of the match. Mizen Goalie, Ross O'Connell, made a great save from an Ardfield Penalty only to have it tapped in on the rebound by Ardfield. Another goal secured Ardfield's win. Final Score Ardfield 2 - 1 Mizen AFC. Next match fixture is at home against Baltimore on Saturday 1st Oct @ 5pm. Good Luck lads! Sheila Lucey PRO. Mizen Rovers -The U16 footballers travelled to Bantry on Sunday last to play Ballingeary in the league final. Throw in was at the early time of 11 o'clock, with underfoot conditions wet after overnight rain. Ballingeary tore into the game from the off and took advantage of some poor defending by the Mizen defence to raise some green flags. It was noticeable that Ballingeary were totally dominant in the middle of the field and were giving good ball into their lively full forwards. Some positional switches in defence and the ability of Darren O' Donovan to keep the scoreboard ticking over at the other end, steadied matters before half time with Ballingeary eight points ahead 6-02 to 2-06. Mizen got going straight from the throw in and scored three points, but Ballingeary broke away to raise another green flag and undo the good work. The local boys really got stuck in after this with half backs Daryl Connell and Aaron Barry attacking and Shane O' Leary taking over in midfield, giving the forwards possession with which to get scores they slowly eat into the lead. In the dying moments Conor O' Driscoll with a great goal levelled the game. From the kick out Ballingeary got possession which led to a free and the winning score. It was heartbreak in the end, but a great battling second half performance. Final score Mizen Rovers 4-16 Ballingeary 7-08. The championship final is next week and the boys will have to get stuck in from the start if they want to get their hands on the cup. The Closing Date for receipt of applications is 5pm on Fri 14th Oct 2011. Skibbereen Ambulance Service - Public Meeting-As you may be aware, Skibbereen Ambulance Service is going to be replaced by a Rapid response car with one Paramedic between the hours of 8pm and 8am 365 days a year in the near future and the Injuries assessment unit in Bantry is being closed during the same hours as of January 2012. The replacement of the Ambulance by a Rapid Response car is bad enough on its own, but combined with the closure of the Bantry Unit it will necessitate the transport of every accident casualty or sick person to a medical facility in Cork. The Rapid Response unit has no patient carrying capability and an ambulance will have to be called on every occasion. The Ambulance is also being replaced in Castletownbere, which means that the entire area of West Cork will have only two ambulances, one in Bantry and one in Clonakilty to cover an area, which needs eight full fire brigades to cover. This is despite the fact that the ambulance service is exponentially busier than the Fire Service. Skibbereen Town Council are extremely concerned with the situation and we have arranged a public meeting on Friday September 30th at 8.00pm in the West Cork Hotel in Skibbereen to discuss and formulate an appropriate response to this impending disaster for the area.
