GOLEEN & DISTRICT COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER SERVING THE MIZEN PENINSULA VOL: 4 WEEK 44 Nov 03 2011 Published every Thursday WEST CORK STILL UNCLEAR ON GARDA STATION CLOSURE With up to five hundred people attending two meetings in West Cork last week in relation to the one Garda Gardaí stations closing, there was no doubting the importance of these stations to their communities. The people of Kilbrittan proved this on Monday night of last week as they packed their local hall and on a wet and windy night on Friday night last again over a hundred people from community alert groups all over West Cork turned up to see can they have this proposed closure stopped. Many community people spoke passionately about community policing and the importance of a local Guard and the local Garda station operating in their areas, They also vented anger at politicians, as they said, who were with the party and not with the people on this and other issues. TDs, Senator, councillors and town councillors were present and each spoke. Who is responsible for these closures? was a question that seemed to get all sorts of answers. Some politicians said it was the responsibility of the Garda Commissioner. Again, following this meeting, the committee urged our elected representatives to seek answers to a number of questions. Following this meeting an action group was set up on this matter with members from the Kealkill, Goleen, Ballydehob, Coomhola, Kilbrittan, Drinagh and Drimoleague Community Alert groups. A further meeting of this committee was held in Skibbereen tonight and from there a national meeting will be organised in Athlone on Tuesday week where groups from all over Ireland will meet. Many of these groups have indicated their interest already in having a national meeting, so action is happening on this issue very quickly. SWANSEA CORK FERRY NEWS A BLOW TO WEST CORK When news broke yesterday of the Fastnet Line group of companies being placed in interim examinership at a sitting of the High Court, it sent shock waves throughout West Cork. The Fastnetline companies are owned by West Cork Tourism Cooperative Society which was formed in April 2009. It has four hundred members that have individually invested funds into the venture. This peninsula played no small part in the setting up of the Fastnetline company. All the people, who gave thousands to get the Swansea Cork Ferry up and running, gave the funding for the good of tourism in the whole of West Cork and beyond. The Ferry has discontinued its full service for now. The restructured viable business plan presented as part of the examinership process, forecasts that the service will recommence on Friday April 6th 2012 and sail until Saturday September 29th. Radical changes have been implemented including the ships flag being reduced from 1504 passengers to 950 passengers. The service has been severely hampered by the continuing increase in world oil prices with a single voyage costing €18,560 in fuel costs alone. This announcement is a huge worry to all in any kind of business in West Cork as the ferry gave a huge boost to tourism figures down here. It is also a great inconvenience to travellers. There is no doubt that for those who had their ears on the ground that this announcement is not a shock, but it will be seen as a big blow to this region and all we can now do is hope that the new restructured viable business plan will work out for all our sakes. MC GDCC Mizen AFC— took on Ardfield at home last Saturday. Ardfield dominated the first half with a 2-0 lead, but Mizen came back more determined in the second half and Daniel O Callaghan scored early, from a penalty after the sending-off of an Ardfield player. John Cullinane got the second goal to even the score and succeeded to score another before the final whistle to put Mizen in the lead. Mizen AFC 3 - 2 Ardfield. Great result! Thank you to O'Meara's Bar for providing food for the players after the match! Our next fixture is away to Crossmahon, in the Convent grounds, on Saturday 5 @ 3pm. Good Luck Lads!! Sheila Lucey PRO.
