Reading books or doing homework during lectures and films will not be permitted. Homework from any class will be ripped up, and books or magazines will be confiscated and returned the following school day. Raise your hand when you have something to say and wait to be recognized. No eating of candy, chewing of gum, or drinking of soda, etc., will be allowed. Writing on desks is not permitted. Let me know at the beginning of the period if there are any marks on your desk. Do not touch the windows or shades without my permission. Jackets and coats should not be brought into the classroom. They belong in your locker. Over zealous reaction by an individual, or a group of students to a comment or anecdote is not appropriate behavior. Always be respectful toward your fellow students. They have every right to express their opinions and to ask questions. If you have a particular grievance against me, you will have to see me in private. Confrontations in class and in front of others will not be tolerated. A conference will be arranged as quickly as possible. Misconduct can result in an extra written assignment, a call home to your parent or guardian, or the notification of your misbehavior to the Assistant Principal in charge of discipline. Materials Necessary You must have a notebook, and have it open before the start of each class. Always have your text. Always have a couple of pens (blue or black ink). Make sure you use loose-leaf paper when you plan to hand something in. Paper from spiral notebooks is not acceptable since it creates unnecessary litter and presents a sloppy impression. This includes homework, quizzes, and tests. Failure to do so will result in your grade being lowered. Homework 1. Make sure you write down your assignments. 2. If you are sick or have a valid excuse, you will be given an extension to finish your assignment. Remember, successful completion of your homework will help your overall average. 3. Once you enter the classroom, you will not be permitted to leave the room in order to get your homework. Tests and Quizzes Tests will constitute a major portion of your grade. All tests will be announced several days in advance. Make sure you take your book home in case you are absent the day before a test. Tests will cover all the material gone over in class. Requirements during a test or quiz: a. Nothing on the desk except a blank sheet of paper. b. No communication. If you have a question, raise your hand. c. There will be no turning from a face-front position. d. All your materials should be under the desk and not open. Prepare for tests by studying every day. Look at the material and ask yourself basic questions starting with the words who, why, how, and what. Final Comments One of the best ways to remember something is to write it down. Therefore, notes are required. Participate in classroom discussions on a daily basis. Feel free to disagree with my historical observations and interpretations. Ask questions when you fail to understand something. Always use pen (blue or black ink) when you hand something in. Go to the washroom between periods. Going to the washroom during class may be counted as a tardy. Always have some tissue or a handkerchief with you. Electronic devices that go off during class will result in a written assignment.
