We had to have a change of venue, so great big thanks go to Kevin Denis of Professors Diner for securing the substitute location. The weather started out a little iffy. It was raining at many of our homes in the morning. But the sun came out over our show and it was a beautiful day. Thank you Dennis and Elliott and your committee and helpers for all your hard work. TONY has 2 events coming up in August. On the 16th we will be going as a group to Stony Brook's Ward Melville Heritage Organization motorcycle exhibit. Meet at the WMHO Educational & Cultural Center in Stony Brook Village at 10 AM. LITC will be joining us there. (see detailed information on page 11). The next day is our club picnic/barbecue at the home of Tom & Barbara Drechsler, 8 Martha Place in Port Jefferson Station at 1 PM. Bring your 'birds. They live on a dead-end street so the cars will be safe. Bring your bathing suits and towel, and either a salad (side dish) or a dessert. RSVP to Barbara (631-642-7547) or to me (631-667-6474). If you have room in your car, chairs might be a good thing to bring also. A short August meeting will be held at that time. VICE PRESIDENT’ REPORT: Dennis Benfante – (Dennis ran the July 7th meeting, as the President was away) There were not many members at the July 7th monthly meeting (23). Discussion was about our club’s up-coming car show for Sunday, July 20th, the barbeque at the Dreschslers on Sunday, August 17th and the mini concours picnic for Saturday, September 6th ….and then we had our tech session. For those going to the Drechslers, everyone was told, who intends to go, to let him know and to bring a dish. I am assuming that our next meeting (August) will be held there also. We discussed the Mini on the Saturday after Labor Day (September 6th). Bob will secure the permit required for our spot and the usual volunteers will bring the food, drinks and goods. Bob will bring the Ice and coolers, Dennis will bring the drinks, Arlene will bring the paper goods, Lou will bring the dogs and burgers with rolls. We do need someone to bring the charcoal, foil and condiments, utensils, garbage bags As usual, a dish of some sort brought by members will be greatly appreciated. We can have more informal conversation at the Drechslers on the 17th I also recapped the Shelter Island car show from last week. Our excellent tech session was with Alan Leon, who talked about the petroleum industry - He talked about blends for different climates and seasons. ….lots of technical talk. Very interesting. I did get this out of it though. When we put our cars away for the winter we should top them off with premium, because regular loses octane while being in the tank unused. He also stated that we should put in an additive when we start up in the spring. *…and graciously, as a bonus, Alan Leon donated a $50.00 (fuel?) gift card for us to raffle off. Very generous Page 2 gesture. Thank You Alan!! Charlie Psarreas won the 50/50 for $28. …Member Comments on Alan Leon’s Tech Session: From Bob C.: Alan Leon, owner of Leon Petroleum Corp LLC, & who also owns a few BP Service Stations and with many years of background in the Petroleum Industry, volunteered to give our club a Tech Session on the History, Do’s & Don'ts, Cautions, and the Real Story, etc. of all the various Gasoline blends, especially the E 15 blend… Alan's Tech Session was really interesting -I doubt if anyone would recall most of Alan's talk. Alan began with the history of Gasoline… he started out from the 1800's with Crude oil being discovered in PA and how they found that they could distill the crude oil (not refined yet) and make kerosene… Only used for heat, oil lights, etc, in those days... a waste product of the distilling was gasoline. Since the internal combustion engine was not invented yet, it was only used as a cleaning product... Now comes the internal combustion motor... then the world of gasoline begins... he spoke of how octane came about, who the anti-knocking problem was solved with lead first, etc. you had to be there...Great Session... I only wish we could have recorded it... everyone really enjoyed it and learned a lot... Alan even had a question break about 1/2 way thru and again at the end... Many very interesting questions brought up and answered by Alan... You had to be there. *Alan Leon, who did such a great job with his gasoline tech session at our last meeting, has again volunteered to give another session in the future on the history of oils and lubricants... we will ask the members if they wish to hear more. Contact Bob Ceraso if you are interested. From Pete: Our speaker last evening was very gracious. Tech talk was great. Very informative and he answered many questions from the club. He spoke about how we evolved with all the restrictions on fuel use and product delivery. In the teens they had trouble with knocking and what was discovered as an antiknock additive, the lead additive. He uses high test gas in his collector cars filled up and doesn’t bother with stable. Alan is also is a 50’s Ford car collector with several Y-block V8 cars. …Would have liked to tape the meeting. You missed a good meeting. from Dennis Benfante on our July 20th CAR SHOW: '55's First place to Rich Moriarty Category B '56's First place Mike Tinnirello Second place Stan Matusewicz Page Category A 3 First let me say a great big thank you to all the members who showed up early to help set up and man the tables. Everyone was extremely helpful but without Dianne Daly at the table I think we would have been in big trouble. The Daly's always pitch in. I'm NOT discounting the enormous help from everyone else. We did have a few showers in the early in the morning, but the Thunderbird gods were with us, because it cleared up to be a very comfortable day. We did have 18 "Little Birds" attending……which happened to be the largest group with the Retro Birds coming in a close second with 15. Here are the results of the judging and awards given to our members. Category C '57's Category J Modified First place Joe Marchione Second place Michael Katz and Ed Ceglia (tied) Third place Dave Gordon and Steve Dorn ( tied) Third place Florence Dick Any member who was pre-registered and was unable to attend will get his Turtle Wax product and the show shirt. I will bring them to our next meeting (at the Drechsler's) and then to our Mini in September. Thanks again – to all, supporting our club..................Dennis AND: THANKS from Elliott Weiner, President of the Long Island Thunderbird Club….. giving us his report about our July 20th car show: “This was the 9th year for our classic car show….but it was not at the Huntington dealership this year as their large inventory of too many cars and trucks in their lot, took up too much space. So, the owner, Kevin Denis, of the Professor’s Diner in Kings Park at the Key Food Shopping Center said that we could have our show there! As some of you know, a weekly car cruise is held there every Thursday evening. So, on Sunday, July 20th the show committee and an army of volunteers showed up at the Key Food shopping center at 6 a.m. to set up. Yes - 6 a.m. !! There were over (80) plus cars and trucks pre-registered, and (45) plus vehicles that arrived the day of the show. The great Generation Band arrived around 8:30 in the morning, to set up. (John Mioli is their contact person and also a salesman at Ford Lincoln of Huntington). The biggest class was the LITTLE BIRDS, followed by the BIG Birds and Retros. There were some really nice cars, and the guy who won best in show last year, Tom Hannigan, showed up with his beautiful ‘60 T-Bird Convertible, along with John Makowej with his custom ‘70 Bird - from Connecticut. The best in show and dealers choice awards were won by two non-Thunderbird cars……a ‘39 Mercury, and a ‘31 Model A. (Also, keeping with tradition, all the show committee cars were not judged.) Thanks to the LITC guys Ken Weinberg, (helps count ballots & is our rep for the charity – Homes for Heroes), Art Fleming, Nick Luciano, Ron Roth, Charlie Steuer, Joe Seasack and Paul Rosina. Thanks to the TONY guys: Dennis Benefante who took care of the pre-registered cars, and the counting of the ballots. Kudos behind the scenes - Dennis is an important piece of the puzzle…Does many things that help make our show a success. Dianne Daly is our resident tent lady, and Bruce Daly & Elliott Weiner helped with the parking and the collecting of the 50/50. Bruce and Elliott, collected close to 700 dollars, with our own TONY member, Pete Cochrane winning the 50/50 - a whopping $350.00 –Congratulations, Pete!! - (& then Pete made a generous donation to the Homes for Heroes charity). …more of the parking of the cars was handled by Dave Dick, along with John “The Cat’ Cattonar, Geppie DeSimone, Lou Realmuto, Joe Marchione, and Jack Provanzano. Thank you! Page 4 Our Sponsors – Thank you Steve Weiss - the BIG KAHONA at Ford and Joel Flack, their VP for supporting our show, and without their generosity and insight we would have no show. Thanks to Tom Healy of Turtle Wax for all the products he gives us... Our new sponsor Prizm and their head guy Jerry Baltes for their polish. And also now the shirt people, who appear on the back of our long sleeve T shirt - These people support us every year:. Bill Carberry from Cap-a-Radiator, Mike Rau from Tires, Inc., Bob Fregenti from Fregenti Insurance, and this year our own Bob Ceraso – Legendary Thunderbird Parts & Cars.” Great job, everyone! Thank you!” …and Thank You too, to Jerry Calabresse, President of the North Jersey Thunderbird Club who came to visit us. Also attending our annual car show event again this year, was Pat and Joanne LeStrange – Pat is the President of the NJ Open Road Thunderbird Club and also our Regional Director – Region #1 at CTCI – (Classic Thunderbird Club International). They drove here in their beautiful Starmist Blue ’57 Thunderbird. It’s a beauty of a car w/ a navy canvas top. It was a pleasant surprise to see them again. How nice to attend other club’s car shows in different states! Joanne and Pat are avid travelers….just returned from Missouri having attended the CTCI International Convention in Springfield the beginning of July, in their blue Thunderbird, shown below. Joanne is the club photographer and does a great job capturing candid and impromptu shots of classic cars. (thank you for attending and supporting our show!) Thank you TONY members who participated and made this year’s car show, another great success! ___________________________________________________________________________ SECRETARY MINUTES: John Cattonar SECRETARY’S MINUTES: MEETING NOTES - John Cattonar, Secretary, T.O.N.Y. Page 5 The meeting came to order at 7:55 p.m. Peter Cochrane, our treasurer, reported we now have $1,369.09 in the club's treasury. Vice President, Dennis Benfante took over running the meeting since Florence was out of town. He reported that we now have 82 people signed up for our show on July 20th. Dennis also explained why the show was moved from the Huntington Ford dealer's lot to Kings Park. The dealer had almost a hundred trucks on his lot that were supposed to be shipped out but weren't. No place to put them, plus his regular inventory. Everything is in place for a good show- plenty of parking, food galore, a TJ Max store to shop in right there and a bar a few steps away for a cool one. Praying for good weather! We had a wonderfully informed guest speaker, Alan Leon. He owns a number of gas stations and knows all about the petroleum industry. He gave a 45 minute presentation starting with the history of gasoline right up to the present. He discussed the "whole nine yards" about the use of Ethanol and how it came about and also the effects on our cars as well as the right way to store your car over long periods of time. He answered numerous questions from our members at the end of his presentation. If you weren't there, you missed a very informative presentation. Dennis Benfante reminded those volunteers for the show to get there EARLY. Shoot for 7:00 A.M. to help set up. Just a reminder, that Tom and Barbara Drechsler have graciously invited the club to their home on August 17th for a club barbeque. Anyone attending should bring a side dish, dessert etc. (Check with the hosts on what to bring). 50/50 -- $28.00 was won by: Charlie Psarreas - Meeting concluded at 9:35. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ MEMBER NEWS: Nine members attended Shelter Island Car Show, Saturday, June 28th – which also was Dennis’s birthday! _______________________________________________________________________________________________ held at Key Foods shopping center: Kings Park, NY - on Sunday, July 20th Warren Lang, Frank Signoriello, Don Shaffer 6 Newest & oldest club members: Dennis Terrell, Warren, Don Page All – Ford Car Show pics: Page 7 Dianne Daly _______________________________________________________________________________________________ See below: Elliott and Dennis, Motor Mouth Radio, prior to the club car show….. along with Ray & Chris from the show. There’s something for all of us! Thanks Bob! _______________________________________________________________________________________________ From Geppie deSimone, on Hagerty Auto Insurance: Coming home from Ford Carlisle on 6/6/14 I was driving my ‘56 Ford Sunliner. I had no problems until I was on the Belt Parkway in Coney Island. The traffic was backed up because of the exiting of Belmont Stakes (race track). The car started to over-heat and I was unable to get off the next exit. The engine was really hot and had to shut it off….. luckily on a rest stop of the pkwy. I called Hagerty for the provided 50 mile tow. I was told that they could not tow on the belt pkwy as they need special permits. This was sometime about 6pm. I had to call the police for the local tow. They came in about 20 minutes. They towed me to the next exit - Flatbush Avenue to a ‘toys r us’ shopping center. The charge was $136 which I gladly paid. I then called Hagerty back again for the free 50 mile tow. I was told that they are very busy and that they could not come until midnight. The flat bed came right on time - midnight. (5 ½ hour wait). I got home with the car at 2:45 a.m. The next day I received an Email from Hagerty on how happy I was for the assistance they gave. Given numbers of 10, I gave a 2. I then called the 800 number asking for a supervisor… was told someone would call me back. They did about 2 hours later. He was very apologetic for what happened. He told me no matter what traffic conditions, or problems they still promise a tow within 90 minutes. He was going to look in the matter. The next day he called back again asking me to write a letter about the experience and a copy of the bill of $136 that I had already paid. I received a check for the full amount, two weeks later. I am writing this because I have never had a bad experience with them, so I feel they do what they can to help the classic car. Also, another story about Hagerty Insurance: a few years ago, Arlene needed a tow for one of her classic cars, but in the stressful situation, forgot to call Hagerty and instead quickly called a tow company recommended by a friend who owns an auto body repair shop. The tow company happened to be the same one that Hagerty uses….so she wrote a letter to Hagerty explaining the situation and since it was a first time occurrence, Hagerty reimbursed Arlene for the entire towing fee. Page 12 REMEMBER – most of your classic car insurance companies have FREE towing included in your policy!
