Dear Spanish Student,
I am very pleased to inform you that you will have the opportunity to take the
National Spanish Exam this year. The purpose of the National Spanish
Examination is to
 recognize achievement in the study of the Spanish language
 promote proficiency in interpretive communication in the Spanish
language
 assess the national standards as they pertain to learning Spanish
There are cash prizes awarded to local and national winners.
The National Spanish Exam is an online, standardized assessment tool consisting of
two parts: (1) an achievement test based on specifications for vocabulary and
specifications for grammar, and (2) a proficiency test which assesses interpretive
communication based on the specifications for listening comprehension and reading
comprehension. The time limit for each section of the test is 40 minutes.
Part 1 of the test (Achievement) will be administered during class on Tuesday,
March 22 (pds. 1, 3), Wednesday, March 23 (pd. 5), and Thursday, March 24 (pd.
4) . You will take Part 2 (Proficiency) in D111 after school (3:20-4:00 p.m.) on
March 21, 22 or 23. The cost per student is $6.00. You must pay this exam fee at
the Bookstore by Thursday, January 28th if you want to take the exam. If paying
by check, please make it payable to Deerfield High School.
In order to prepare for the exam, you will have access to an online list of concepts
that will be covered. There are also activities geared toward helping you to review.
The website is www.nationalspanishexam.org. Click on Exam Preparation and
then select “Past Examinations” and “Online Practice Exercises” for level 3
(Spanish 3 Honors) or level 4 (Spanish 4 Honors).
