CDR Calhoun’s Lab Policy for SC112 1. The pre-lab is just that - completed prior to lab. It shall be turned in to me prior to lab and will constitute part of the grade for that lab. 2. At the beginning of lab the next week, the lab report (in the form delineated in the lab itself), will be due at the beginning of class. Late lab reports get half credit. 3. Safety is of the utmost importance in the chemistry lab. Think safety when performing experiments, and pay special attention to safety precautions in the laboratory handouts. Safety violations and/or inappropriate behavior will be grounds for dismissal from any lab and will result in a grade of zero for the assignment or exercise missed. Safety goggles and lab aprons shall be worn at all times in the Chemistry Department laboratories. Due to the real possibility of pink eye infection, students should NOT share goggles. The students should label their goggles with their alpha numbers, using a permanent marker & they should wash the goggles with soap/water on a regular basis. Lab stools will remain stowed at the work islands to keep the lab aisles clear. Similarly, book bags and other gear must be left in the hallways or otherwise stowed to keep the lab aisles clear. Failure to do this or to adhere to safety guidelines given in the General Chemistry Laboratory Manual will be grounds for dismissal from the laboratory. You must leave your laboratory station and equipment clean and ready for the next student. If any equipment is broken or in unsatisfactory condition, bring it to my attention immediately and it will be replaced. 4. You will frequently be required to work with a lab partner (or partners). You may collaborate with your lab partner(s) in the making of observations and the collecting of data. This is authorized collaboration. (Realize that even authorized collaboration needs to be acknowledged.) However, the laboratory write up (i.e. the analysis of data and the answering of questions) will be performed individually. Only those templates given in the Lab Manual or by the instructor may be directly copied. You may use your own previously written labs as models, if the work is entirely your own. Failure to comply with the stated assistance/independence directions for the completion of any assignment will be considered as an honor offense. Do NOT be fooled into thinking the lab portion of the course is “only” worth 15% of your grade. Lab material WILL be included on quizzes and exams.
