CHRISTOPHER L WASDEN, EdD
RANGE OF EXPERIENCE
Chris Wasden is a professor of innovation in the Entrepreneurship and Strategy Department at the
University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business. He also serves as the Executive Director of the
Sorenson Center for Discovery and Innovation and the Associated Executive Director of the Center for
Medical Innovation.
He continues to collaborate with PwC in consulting roles where he had been a managing director for
nearly seven years and served as the Global Healthcare Innovation Leader. While at PwC he lead Digital
Health opportunities within the Health Industries Advisory Strategy and Innovation practice focused on
healthcare, biopharma, medical devices, and life science. He advises clients on how to innovate along
the entire Innovation Lifecycle from discovering, to incubating, to accelerating and then scaling to deliver
novel and value creating solutions. He works with healthcare payers, providers, pharmaceutical, medical
device and diagnostic companies, as well as private equity firms, venture capital, and governments.
Chris has a rich and diverse background of experience that gives him a unique perspective when
assisting clients on their strategic initiatives. He spent nearly a decade on Wall Street as an investment
banker doing M&A, corporate finance, derivative, and risk management work around the world for JP
Morgan and Union Bank of Switzerland executing over $12 billion in transactions. He spent several years
in C-level positions with multi-billion dollar private and public companies leading their corporate finance
and strategic initiatives, and leading the commercial, market, and credit risk management functions in the
financial, commodity, and foreign exchange markets. Prior to joining PwC, he spent nearly a decade as a
medical and technology entrepreneur starting four separate companies, becoming a named inventor on
11 issued patents, evaluating over 100 different medical technologies, raising over $50 million in angel
and venture capital commitments, being named by Inc. Magazine as a runner up in their annual
Entrepreneur of the Year competition, and taking new ventures to liquidity events.
Chris is a prolific thought leader having published scores of articles and reports on innovation, medical
technology and digital health technologies. He is a highly sought after public speaker and university
lecturer on strategy, entrepreneurship, innovation, and mobile healthcare and he has taught and lectured
undergraduate and graduate courses on these topics at several universities.
Consulting engagement experience includes:
Digital Health and Internet of Things strategy – two of the world’s largest microprocessor companies
on their market entry and growth strategies in the wearables, biosensors, and internet of things market for
health, fitness, and wellness.
Wellness market strategy – one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds on their investment and
market entry strategy into the global wellness market including fitness, corporate and consumer wellness
services and technologies, senior living, rehabilitation, and other related markets.
Corporate wellness strategy – the world’s largest professional services firm on the creation of a state of
the art wellness program that incorporate mobile sensors and devices as well as apps and other services.
Digital health innovation lab and incubator – led PwC’s Personal Connected Health innovation lab
and incubator that developed state of the art business model simulation technologies to design new
wellness programs, insurance products, and risk-based healthcare products and services called “Owning
the Disease” business model design. Used these simulation tools to advise global pharmaceuticals,
medical device, payers and provider organizations.
Remote patient monitoring strategy - global telecommunications and technology companies in sizing

the remote patient monitoring market, developing its various offerings and pricing, screening and
selecting strategic partners, negotiating the MOU and key terms, developing its business plan and go-tomarket strategy.
Health Cloud solutions strategy - global telecommunications company in evaluating 66 different
healthcare cloud solutions, developing a screening and selection criteria, selecting the top 7 offerings,
sizing the market opportunity and developing their high level strategic approach for market entry.
Health information exchanges strategy - global telecommunications company in sizing the HIE market,
doing a competitive analysis of the marketplace, repositioning their offering in the market, identifying key
milestones over time necessary to success, and creating a detailed strategic roadmap for the next five
years.
Remote patient monitoring information management strategy - global diabetes solutions company in
developing their data integration and management strategy for glucometers taking into account the
emergence of mhealth, HIE and EHRs.
mHealth strategy - global mobile handset manufactures, global industry standards organization,
healthcare payers and providers, and global telecommunications companies in the US, Spain, Brazil,
Finland. Developed strategy for entering the mhealth market with application platform, technology
interoperability, wellness, fitness, ageing independently, and chronic disease management strategies.
Published Health Unwired and several other publications on mhealth based upon consumer and
physician surveys and case studies to identify the opportunities, barriers, and requirements for success.
Social media strategy - global wholesale pharmaceuticals company in evaluating their current social
media programs across the enterprise, conducting a benchmarking versus peers, and providing direction
and strategic advice to improve their programs by applying best practices.
Digital healthcare delivery strategy - large regional healthcare provider in Northern California in
creating the digital healthcare delivery strategy. Benchmarked them against both national and regional
providers. Created a five year strategic and technical roadmap to be used by the Chief Information Officer
and Chief Marketing Officer to guide their program.
Information Technology Interoperability – advised a leading healthcare organization in identifying,
quantifying and measure the waste in the U.S. healthcare system associated with a lack of medical
technology interoperability. Developed strategies to engage the market place to create standards to
eliminate the associated waste.
Innovation Incubator development - large academic medical center, global insurance company, and
global financial services firm in assessing their current innovation programs, conducting gap analysis
between current and best practices, designing their revised innovation program, and assisting in
launching their innovation incubators. Included extensive online surveys, interviews, focus groups,
competitive analysis, workshops, training, and program design.
Innovation campaigns and challenges design and operations - global insurance company in
designing and running their innovation campaigns and challenge process to generate thousands of ideas
and select the leading candidates for new products, services, solutions, and businesses. Developing
business cases to move the ideas to incubation.
Innovation benchmarking and best practices benchmarking - academic medical center in
benchmarking their innovation program against 15 other leading academic medical centers, identifying
best practices and gaps in performance, and recommending areas of improvement to continue to be in
the top decile among peers. Published the Medical Technology Innovation Scorecard report that
identified 100 measures by country to rank and assess the innovative capacity and capability of 9
countries. Benchmarked best practices among a dozen state sponsored venture funds in supporting and
incubating early state life science technologies.
Technology assessment and go-to-market strategy - global consumer electronics company in
evaluating two new technologies that had developed and their market potential based upon their novelty

and value creation capabilities. Developed market sizing, identified partners, and provided high level
roadmap for further development and commercialization. Global medical device company in creating their
go to market strategy for a new technology through scenario analysis to determine whether or not they
should go to market directly, through strategic partnerships of through an open process. Large healthcare
integrated delivery system in creating a technology innovation framework for focusing on what type of
innovations from what area of science would have the greatest impact on their organization over the next
five years.
Secondary use of medical data strategy - global medical device and electronic healthcare records
vendor in re-evaluating their current clinical data services business, identify strengths and weaknesses,
redirecting their strategy, screening from among hundreds and selecting top five acquisition targets and
partners to improve their product offering and market positioning.
Disease management assessment and due diligence - large private equity firm in a comprehensive
analysis of the disease management industry, identifying why the industry is failing to deliver value,
conducting commercial due diligence of the one of the largest companies in the industry and
recommended how they would need to radically alter the strategy to become successful in the market.
International market entry strategy - large academic medical center in creating a framework for
evaluating its international growth opportunities in both the developed and emerging markets. Screening
dozens of opportunities, priorities those for partnership and affiliation.
Emerging market growth strategy - global medical device company in doubling the size of their Latin
American business in five years through restructuring their 3rd party distribution network, enhancing their
direct marketing efforts and creating a physician training and educational program.

plans and business. Providing innovation consulting services to other large corporations doing
corporate venturing.

Executive leadership - held various senior executive positions in both new ventures and large

corporations in the energy, petrochemical, and utility sectors, including MD, CFO and CEO titles.
Experienced in turn-arounds, change management and strategic business development.

Risk management - advised risk management, derivatives, structured product companies in the
US, Japan, and Europe in creating new joint ventures and businesses in the debt, equity,
commodity and currency markets on the CBOE, CME, and OTC markets. Led the selection and
implementation of the Algorithmic risk manage solution at Koch Industries, one of the world's
largest commodity and financial trading companies. Led the team that invented and
commercialized weather derivatives risk management products.

Investment banking - executed over $12 billion in M&A, debt, equity and credit transactions
throughout the world among a divers group of clients in various industries, but primarily focused
on the financial services industry.
